Wagner pitches Wauconda past Deerfield

Jeremy Wagner went the distance on the mound, as Wauconda’s baseball team defeated host Deerfield 10-2 Thursday.

Wagner also went 3-for-4 at the plate. Tim Matesi was 2-for-3 and Cody Rapier had 2 hits in 4 at-bats.

Wauconda (6-2) got doubles from Erik Maki and Jack Botheroyd.

Carmel 7, Palatine 1: Tim Hendricks struck out nine and helped himself at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

Carmel Catholic improved to 2-3.

Vernon Hills 7, Barrington 2: The Cougars didn’t waste much time giving starter Smith Donelon a cushion.

Vernon Hills scored 3 runs on 4 hits in the top of the first, as Chris Marras and Steve Nelson each had RBI doubles.

The Cougars struck again in the fourth, when Anthony Mazza and Tyler Coppney hit back to back one-out singles. M.J. Crowley later plated Mazza, and Coppney scored on an infield hit.

Vernon Hills (9-2) got some insurance in the sixth, as Argianas and Crowley both singled. Brian Palmer then drove them in with a two out double. Argianas and Mazza turned in excellent defensive games accounting for eight outs between them.

Belvidere North 5, Lakes 2: Paul Kukulka went 2-for-2 with a 2-run double for the Eagles (5-4) in the nonconference game.

Belvidere North snapped a 2-2 tie in the sixth by scoring 3 runs.

McHenry 7, Grayslake Central 6: The visiting Warriors rallied from a 6-2 deficit to win the Fox Valley Conference game and hand the Rams their third straight loss.

Grayslake Central (3-3) led 6-2 after four innings and still held a 2-run edge after six. But McHenry scored 3 runs in the seventh.

Austin Leggett had 2 doubles and a single for the Rams, and Jon Gurchak also doubled twice for the hosts.
