Amy Rudolph Basketball Tourney showcases special education students

Seldom do mainstream and special education students work together in a sporting event. The Amy Rudolph Basketball Tournament provides an opportunity for Palatine-Schaumburg Township District 211 high school students to cheer on one another, while raising funds for a worthy cause.

The 29th annual basketball tourney, named in honor of a special education student who died in November 1982 from kidney failure at the age of 15, took place on Friday, Feb. 25, at Hoffman Estates High School.

Special education students from Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg, Palatine, and Hersey High Schools, as well as Kirk School in Palatine participated, with mainstream students from Hoffman Estates High School serving as referees, coaches and scorekeepers.

Over the years, the tournament has raised thousands of dollars for the National Kidney Foundation, which is the beneficiary of all proceeds.
