Wheeling makes it two in a row

Wheeling’s boys basketball team won consecutive games for the first time since November with a 59-40 nonconference win Tuesday night over Maine East in Park Ridge.

Jeremy Stephani scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers and Tyler Shapiro added 10 points. Shapiro and Ricky Schwind fueled the Wildcats’ (6-15) defense that allowed the Demons (3-19) only 16 points through three quarters.

Charlie Kirk, Billy Jaimie and Matt Hart helped Wheeling to a 28-12 rebound edge.

“It was our best team defensive effort,” said Wheeling coach John Clancy. “The ball press turned them over a lot early and the difference was we dominated the rebounding battle.”

Schaumburg 55, Glenbard North 45: Kurt Kempema had 13 points, Kyle Bolger added 11 points and Javon McDonald and Mike Mallett scored 9 apiece for Schaumburg (10-10) in the nonconference win.

Maine West 52, Leyden 41: Odera Eneogwe (24 points), Kevin Garcia (12 points, four 3s) and Conor Hart (9 points) led Maine West (14-8) to its fifth win in seven tries in the nonconference game in Franklin Park. Eric Palmer (14 points) and Alex Herrera (13 points) led Leyden (7-13).

Lake Park 58, Hersey 49: Tom Sutrinaitis scored 17 points and Sean Reszotko added 8 points for Hersey (13-9) in the nonconference loss.

Christian Liberty 52, Schaumburg Christian 47: Luke Comerouski (19 points), Ben Thomas (17 points, 15 rebounds) and David Colbert (8 points) led Christian Liberty (8-12) to the nonconference win.
