Prospect senior Ashley Wabik made the second of 2 free throws for a 47-43 lead over visiting Wheeling with 13 seconds left at the Jean Walker Field House on Friday night.

Wheeling junior Kellie Kuzmanic then made 2 of 3 free throws with three seconds.

The Wildcats got the rebound on the third attempt and missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer giving Prospect a 47-45 triumph.

“The girls a good job of staying composed at the end,” said Knights coach Martha Kelly, whose team improved to 11-10 and 3-3 in the Mid-Suburban East.

Knights sophomore guard Michele Molini scored all 6 of her points in the fourth quarter and Wabik had a big putback in the period.

Senior center Sarah Hunt hit a turnaround bank shot with two minutes left to give Prospect a 42-41 lead it would never relinquish.

Hunt finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior Maura Benson collected 15 rebounds with her 8 points.

Junior Leah Malsom led Wheeling (3-20, 1-6) with 15 points while Kuzmanic finished with 11.

“I thought Christina Brucci (7 points) really came in and stepped for us offensively and defensively,” Kelly added. “She got us three jump-ball tie-ups and Maura (Benson) did a great job defensively.”

Brucci, Sarah Winans and Molini each had a 3-pointer for Prospect.

Buffalo Grove 43, Elk Grove 35: Seniors Emily Cho (14 points) and senior Emily Georgoulis (10 points) were top scorers for visiting Buffalo Grove, which won for the ninth time in 13 games.

Andrea DiPrima added 8 points for BG (9-13), which is now 5-2 in the Mid-Suburban League East, 1½ games behind Hersey (6-0).

Elk Grove (8-13, 1-5) was led by sophomore Diamond Boyd, who scored 8 of her 12 points in the second half.

Freshman Melissa Solorio added 11 for the Grens.

Barrington 43, Conant 34: Barrington (15-7, 5-1) stayed 1 game off the pace in the Mid-Suburban West as senior guard Abby Kirchoff enjoyed her third straight 20-plus scoring game with a game-high 22 points.

Junior Nicole Collins added 13 with three 3-pointers for the visiting Fillies, who were 11-of-11 in the fourth quarter from the free throw line.

Kirchoff made 7-of-7 in the final period.

“We shot free throw very well down the stretch Barreiro said. “I felt like everyone was out of sync offensively. Conant played nice zone defense.

“I was proud of the kids because they maintained their composure and were able to get the job done.”

Kelly Lomas (13 points), Michelle Rawleigh (11) and Lindsay Fillingham (10) led Conant (12-8, 2-4).

Rawleigh had three 3-pointers.

Fremd 48, Palatine 36: Junior Jessi Wiedemann scored a game-high 19 points and senior Megan Horn added 10 as host Fremd (18-4, 6-0) remained 1 game ahead of Barrington in the Mid-Suburban West.

Senior Bridget Kubis added 9 points for the Vikings and classmate Jaimie Groot chipped in 8.

The Vikings were 10-for-10 at the free throw line with Wiedemann making 6.

Palatine (6-15, 0-6) was led by sophomore McKenzie Wiedemann’s 12 points (two 3-pointers) while Nia Pappas and Kaitlyn Mayer each chipped in 6 points.

Maine West 48, Deerfield 45: Maine West (8-14, 4-2) was led by junior Amanda Hoye (15 points, 5 assists) and freshman Brittany Collins (12 points, 7 rebounds) in the Central Suburban North.

Carly Martin added 7 and Megan John 6 for the host Warriors.
