South Elgin upsets Waubonsie Valley

South Elgin 64, Waubonsie Valley 49: The Storm couldn't have picked a better time to pull off an upset. With a trip to No. 3 Bartlett on the schedule for Tuesday, South Elgin warmed up by knocking off No. 5 Waubonsie Valley at South Elgin Saturday.

"It was a game for the ages," said Storm coach Tim Prendergast, whose team lost to Waubonsie 74-34 on Dec. 14. "We also upset them two years ago but this one was bigger. The kids executed the game plan to a tee and it's a big win for us, especially with Bartlett coming up Tuesday."

The loss sent Waubonsie (15-3, 5-2) 2 games behind Bartlett in the Upstate Eight Valley race. For South Elgin, it was the eighth win in nine games since that 40-point loss to Waubonsie. The Storm is now 10-8 and 3-3 in the Valley.

Becca Smith led the way for South Elgin with 19 points. She hit 9 of 12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter when the Storm salted the game away. Lania Robinson added 15 points and freshman Savannah Uveges had 10.

"Lania Robinson was unbelievable today and Savannah Uveges us getting better with every game," Prendergast said.
