Downers South edges LT for York crown
Jamall Millison’s drive and one-handed shot from 6 feet out rolled around the rim and dropped in with 4.1 seconds left in overtime to give Downers Grove South a 56-55 win for the title at York’s 37th annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic over defending champion Lyons Twp.
“I was nervous when it went around the rim,” Millison said after Lyons’ Eric Powers’ off-balance two-hander failed to fall at the horn.
“I was getting fouled going to the basket the whole game,” Millison said. “I felt like I just had to take it strong and went there, got it.”
No. 2 seed Downers South (11-3) rallied from a 55-52 deficit with 41 seconds left in overtime, after Lyons’ Nick Zeisloft hit a 26-foot 3-pointer. Zeisloft made 1 of 2 free throws with 34.2 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied 47-47.
Unseeded Lyons (10-2) was led by Zeisloft’s 18 points and 11 from Dylan Fiedler. The Mustangs, motivated by a 74-69 home loss to Lyons on Dec. 18, got 12 points from Ziggy Riaulka and 22 from Tosh MVP Jerron Wilbut.
Paul Maggiore served as acting head coach with Jay Baum serving a one-game suspension following an ejection Wednesday.
“For the last three games I think we played pretty good basketball,” Maggiore said. “I just wish Coach Baum was here to see it. He should have been.”
