Wheeling passes late test
Wheeling let its share of winnable games turn into losses last year.
But a game that could have turned into a loss Friday night wound up as a 75-66 win for the Wildcats over Englewood in Maine West's Warrior Classic in Des Plaines.
Wheeling (2-1) saw a double-digit lead cut to 2 points in the fourth quarter.
"I like the way we finished the game and got the ball in the right guy's hands," said first-year Wheeling coach John Clancy. "You could tell our kids are believing. I don't know if in the past we could have won that game."
The present and future was on display for Wheeling as senior Tyler Shapiro and freshman Jeremy Stephani each had 16 points. Stephani hit five of his team's 10 3-pointers and Shapiro also had a 3.
Ricky Schwind had 15 points and two 3s, Charlie Kirk scored 9 points and Nick Boyd and Riley Harvey added 8 points apiece for the Wildcats.
St. Viator 72, Walther Lutheran 56: Junior guard D.J. Morris scored 28 points and hit five 3s as St. Viator (3-0) advanced to the title game of its own Thanksgiving tournament.
Chris Myjak added 18 points and Dan Forde scored 11 for the Lions, who play at 5 p.m. today against Conant (3-0).
Rolling Meadows 59, Deerfield 50: Paul Volkman's 21 points led Meadows (2-1) to the third-round victory in Palatine's Ed Molitor Classic. Brian Nelms added 15 points and was 11-for-12 on free throws, Mike Olson added 11 points and hit three 3s and Tyler Gaedele scored 9 points.
Fremd 61, Fenton 35: Zach Monaghan's 16 points led Fremd (2-2) as it finished seventh in Fenton's 25th annual Chuck Mitchell Thanksgiving tournament. Quinton Brown (14 points), Jack Konopka (10) and Joe Leaf (8) aided a balanced attack.
BG 84, Christian Liberty 38: Luke Potnick (15 points, three 3s), Sam Wacker (14 points), Dan Recht (10 points) and Nick Prus (10 points) led BG (2-1) to the win in its Bison Classic. Luke Comerouski scored 18 for Christian Liberty (1-2).
Niles North 48, Palatine 46 (2 ots): Peter Bony had 17 points and Kurt Becker added 7 points for Palatine (1-2) in the Molitor Classic loss.
Naperville Central 52, Elk Grove 40: Justin Flores scored 16 points and hit three 3s for Elk Grove (1-3) in the fifth place game at Fenton's Mitchell tournament.
Streamwood 55, Leyden 49: Alex Herrera and Patrick Listwan had 15 points apiece for Leyden (1-2) in the Wheaton Academy tournament.
