Prairie Ridge sees a way past Grayslake North
At Prairie Ridge High School Friday night, there was plenty of action happening before the varsity football game between the host Wolves and Grayslake North.
All four banks of lights went dark during the fourth quarter of the sophomore game, causing a lengthy delay. This also meant all pregame Prairie Ridge homecoming festivities proceeded in near total darkness.
After the lights were restored, Prairie Ridge kept their spotless Fox Valley Conference Fox Division record intact with a 31-0 win over the visiting Knights.
Connor Greenwald, who rushed for a game-high 162 yards, provided all of the scoring for Prairie Ridge (5-1, 4-0 in Fox Division) in the first half. He scored on touchdown runs of 4 and 2 yards. He also kicked 2 extra points and a 30-yard field goal.
"We had our moments on offense," said Greenwald. "We made plays when we needed to tonight. However, we feel that we could have had a better night on offense."
Wolves quarterback Stephen Covalt played a big role in the second-half scoring, firing a 29-yard touchdown pass to receiver Sean Valentine. Covalt then followed that score with a 1-yard touchdown run.
"It feels good to get the win," said Covalt. "Give Grayslake North credit, they have been getting better. However, it is a good feeling to get the win."
Grayslake North (3-3, 1-3 in Fox Division) gained a total of 42 yards on offense. The Knights were without quarterback A.J. Fish and running back David Collins as both players were on the sideline due to injuries.
"Their defense (Prairie Ridge's) is really, really good," said Grayslake North head coach Steve Wood. "We were without our two big guns on offense, as they were held out this week.
"We knew it was going to be a long day. We needed our defense to step up and give us a chance, and they played phenomenal. I'm really please with the way they played."
