Wauconda wins own tournament

Wauconda's girls volleyball team won its own tournament Saturday, going 4-1.

The Bulldogs beat Round Lake, North Chicago, Grayslake Central and Marengo, and lost to Lake Forest Academy.

Erinn Hellweg (26 kills, 21 digs) and Megan Tallman (21 kills, 58 assists, 21 digs, 12 aces) represented Wauconda (11-5) on the all-tournament team. Cara Nance also had 26 kills for the Bulldogs and led the team with 28 digs.

Grayslake Central (16-6) also went 4-1 in the tourney but settled for second place as a result of its loss to Wauconda. The Rams picked up victories over Marengo, Round Lake, Lake Forest Academy anf North Chicago.

Klaudia Basierak had a huge tournament with 68 kills, 7 blocks, 14 aces and 40 digs. She and Stephanie Pimpo (62 digs) made the all-tournament team for Grayslake Central. Emily Anderson dished out 96 assists (242-of-251 setting) and delivered 9 aces.

"We had a solid outing," Grayslake Central coach Jason Janczak said. "We struggled with our serving in the Wauconda match, and Wauconda did a great job capitalizing with a vengeance and played very well the rest of the day.

"I'm proud of the way we bounced back after that tough loss. Everyone on the court stepped up and played strongly. It was a good day for us."

Lake Forest Academy (3-2) finished third and Round Lake (2-3) was fourth in the six-team field.

The all-tourney team also included Round Lake's Chanae Brown, North Chicago's Nychell Mitchell and LFA's Rachel Riccio.

At St. Viator: Despite missing Taylor Pippen, Carmel Catholic went 4-1, losing in pool play to Boylan.

Eleia Yonke had 32 digs for the Corsairs, while Hannah Turner served 11 aces. Megan Mowery dished out 75 assists for Carmel (18-4).

At Maine East: Lake Forest finished second out of 16 teams in the two-day Demon Invitational, losing to York (25-13, 16-25, 25-21) in the championship match. The Scouts (7-5, 4-1) defeated DeLaSalle, Niles North, Warren and Maine South.

Mary Streidl had 39 kills, 29 digs, 7 blocks and 7 aces for Lake Forest. Tori Lanzillotti and Alex Funk added 29 kills apiece, while Heidi Sierks dished out 100 assists.

"In general, it was a wonderful tournament for the Scouts," Lake Forest coach Ray Werner said. "We have been working very hard these past few weeks trying to find our identity as a team. Competing as well as we did against solid teams in this tournament was a huge step forward. The girls are believing in themselves and each other more with each match we play."
