The Huntley girls volleyball team made a statement Saturday, winning the championship at the Nike Preview tournament.
The Red Raiders (14-2) knocked off Lincoln-Way West 25-12, 26-24, then beat Queen of Peace 25-18, 25-10 and then downed Lincoln-Way East in the title match 25-12, 25-18.
Sam Boesch led Huntley with 24 kills and 17 digs while Ashley Smith added 19 kills. Eli Manning had 32 assists and Amy Dion 42 digs.
St. Edward at Nike Preview: The Green Wave went 1-4 at the Nike Preview, losing to Lincoln-Way East, Queen of Peace, Mother McAuley and Barrington while beating Mt. Asissi. Margie Haggenjos had 10 kills and 42 digs for St. Edward, while Sarah Norman and Callie Johnson each had 23 kills. Stephanie Igielski added 22 kills and 6 blocks and Katie Ayello had 83 digs.
At Glenbard West: Streamwood finished eighth of 12 teams at the Glenbard West Invite. The Sabres beat Northside Prep but lost to Glenbard West, Prospect, Fremd and Glenbard East. Alyson Montemayor had 21 assists and 5 digs, Liz Simoneli had 13 digs and Maria Ranahan 8 kills to lead the Sabres.
At Westminster: Westminster Christian took third place in its own tournament, beating Elgin Academy, Kirkland Hiawatha and Morgan Park Academy, tying Mooseheart and losing to Marist. Hannah Graves (23 kills, 23 assists, 8 aces, 32 digs), Cara Tyrell (16 kills, 23 aces, 25 digs), Katie Surratt (44 assists, 26 digs) and Whitney Vanden Bos (36 digs, 9 aces, 55 good passes) led Westminster (10-7-1).
At Hersey: Elgin struggled at the Hersey tournament, losing all 5 matches. The Maroons fell to Lake Zurich, Montini, Schaumburg, Mundelein and Montini again. Heather Gawaluck (28 assists, 7 kills, 11 digs), Briana Hamilton (10 kills, 7 blocks, 5 aces), Rachel Roth (23 digs) and Bri Borvan (5 kills, 2 blocks) led the Maroons.
