Fremd, Jacobs' Cahill rule Randall Oaks

A rain threatened afternoon wasn't going to ruin Jacobs golfer Scott Cahill's record-tying day on the links.

In fact, the soft greens at Randall Oaks Golf Club Saturday afternoon played to his advantage. Without much breeze, Cahill made it through the course without any significant trouble (or any rain at all) by tying a course-record 3-under 68 set by Shane Bryant of Glenbard West in 2005 to win the individual championship of the 37th Annual Dundee-Crown Charger Boys Golf Classic.

Cahill fired a 34 on the front and back to finish with a 68 (par 71), but in his mind, it was the way he teed off on the second hole that led him to victory.

"I started off really good, I tried to play conservative," Cahill said. "I had a good few shots, I just got a pretty good start and kept it going the rest of the round."

Cahill's only hiccups were two bogeys on the back nine on the turn. He took advantage of the greens that worked in his favor.

"It was soft, the greens have been rolling pretty nice here lately," said Cahill. "The greens are nice and quick. It was soft, they were in pretty good shape. I felt pretty comfortable."

Glenbard West's Kyle Kochevar and Lake Park's Troy Butler tied for second with even-par 71s. Kochevar was happy to get his confidence back with two birdies and a 33 on the back nine.

"I haven't been playing too well lately, I kind of got it back together today," said Kochevar, who played steady on the front with a 38. "It gave me confidence. I started hitting more greens and got focused more and ended up with a 33."

The tandem of Nick Robles (72) and Brendon Knaizer (73) of Crystal Lake South placed fourth and fifth individually, but helped the Gators combine for a team score of 302. CLS placed second to defending champion Fremd, which also shot a 302. Fremd won the tiebreaker based on the scoring of its fifth golfer, edging out South.

"We knew we could do well here," Fremd coach Josh Teschner said. "Great field. Nice tournament. Beautiful golf course. Very, very proud of going back-to-back. These guys wanted to come here and do that. The three seniors that are in the field, Brad Peterson, Jackson Tworek and Brian Bodolay, talked about it on the way here and put up a good number to do it."

Peterson (74), Tworek (80), Bodolay (76), Zach Isoda (79) and Josh Rosenzweig (73) squeaked passed South with the same score of last year's championship. Rosenzweig shot the best of the group with a 73, which tied for fifth individually. As a team, Fremd is loaded with golfers who can step up.

"Our depth is our strength," Teschner said. "We've gone as low as 287 as a team this year, as high as 331. It's been up and down. This is somewhere between that, something were proud of in terms of five scores that be good. If we had a sixth player, who knows. It was a good day."

Geneva (306) placed fourth and Lake Park (313) rounded out the top five. Jacobs (314) and St. Edward (316) finished respectfully in sixth and seventh place, while South Elgin (328), Bartlett (332) and Palatine (334) finished in the top 15.

Andrew Cisco (tied for 7th) highlighted Geneva's play with a 3-over 74. His teammate Colin Lillibridge shot a 75 to place behind him at eighth. Rounding the top ten were Mike DiGrazia of Crystal Lake South and Colin Lillibridge of Geneva with 75s.
