Cary-Grove, CL South to meet for title at Jacobs
Korey Kronforst wasn't interested in playing any extra minutes.
So, Cary-Grove's talented sophomore forward took care of business in regulation time.
With a minute left in the game, Kronforst raced past three Jacobs defenders and pushed a shot past goalie Alyssa Barnard to give the second-seeded Trojans a 2-1 win over the third-seeded Golden Eagles in a semifinal game of the Class 3A Jacobs girls soccer regional Tuesday night.
"I wanted to make sure I got a good angle to get a good shot off," said Kronforst. "We wanted to win in regulation. Anything can happen in overtime. We beat them two games in the regular season so we knew Jacobs would come out hard. It was a hard-fought game. We are happy to get a win."
Cary-Grove (13-7) will play No. 1 seed Crystal Lake South (17-7-2) for the regional championship Friday at 5:30 p.m. South blanked fourth-seeded South Elgin 4-0 in Tuesday's other semifinal.
Tuesday's Trojans-Golden Eagles matchup seemed destined for overtime when Jess Tenant scored for the Golden Eagles off a perfect touch pass from Kelsey Quitschau to tie the score at 1-1 with 6:45 left in the contest.
"I couldn't asked for more of an effort from the kids," said Jacobs coach Anthony Cappello. "Kronforst is a dangerous player in the gaps. She is a very good player. She found an opening and capitalized on that opening. We had some ups and down, but this
was a positive year."
Kronforst gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead on a header with only 3:18 elapsed in the game.
"People underrate Korey because she is a sophomore," said Cary-Grove coach Ray Krystal. "She is a very talented and quick player. Jacobs played good defense but she found a little room on the Jacobs' defender's inside shoulder and got off a good shot."
CL South 4, South Elgin 0: Crystal Lake South didn't want underdog South Elgin to have any glimmer of hope.
The Gators, with a good start, made sure the Storm would have no chance of an upset.
Scoring 3 goals in the first half, the Gators cruised to a 4-goal shutout win of South Elgin (13-9-1).
"We wanted to dictate tempo and put nonstop pressure on them," said South coach Brian Allen. "We did a great job of playing hard for 80 minutes and we didn't let South Elgin get any rhythm."
Kali Loescher scored the Gators' first goal of the game with 27:21 left in the first half off a perfectly placed pass from Christina Szocka. Alison Agnes and Ashley Ross, who is headed to Toledo, also added first half goals as the Gators led 3-0 at intermission.
Loescher also had 2 assists for the winner. The Gators scored an insurance goal when Katie Burton blasted in a direct kick from 30 yards out with 11:26 remaining.
The Gators outshot South Elgin 17-6. Storm goalie Emily Young registered 8 saves.
"They were a tough team to play because they played kick ball and controlled the ball," said South Elgin coach Tiffany Disher. "They do a good job of dropping the ball to the forwards, who are very fast. They are a very physical team and they play like linebackers They knocked us off the ball.
"I was proud of the effort. We never gave up."
Huntley 8, Rockford Auburn 0: The Red Raiders (20-3-1) wasted little time taking control of Tuesday's Class 3A Rockford Jefferson regional as they easily defeated Rockford Auburn.
Aimee Wronski recorded her team-leading 25th and 26th goals of the season while Ashley Schorr also found the back of the net twice to lead the Red Raiders. Emily Konior, Taylor Henning-Fletter, and Ashley Arnieri scored Huntley's other 3 goals. Sara Hoffman and Kaytlyn Owens preserved the shutout for the Red Raiders in goal.
Hampshire 5, Woodstock 0: The Whip-Purs (18-5-1) used a balanced attack as they surged out to an early 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back as they defeated Woodstock in the Class 2A Marengo regional.
"So many players had strong games tonight," said Hampshire coach Patrick O'Brien. "I'm very proud of their efforts and excited about the challenge that lies ahead."
The Whips' received goals from 5 different players as Emily Zeller, Kelsey Burke, Cassie Dumoulin, Alex Field, and Karla Vietinghoff all found the back of the net. Haylee Moscato preserved the shutout with 5 saves in goal.
