St. Viator pulls ESCC sweep

St. Viator combined the pitching with the power for an East Suburban Catholic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Joseph on Saturday.

Brendan King (2-2) threw a 4-hitter as the Lions (10-6, 3-1) won the opener 8-0 and he had one of their 4 homers as they took the second game 13-3.

King had 7 strikeouts and no walks and threw 56 of his 84 pitches for strikes. He also drove in 2 runs and had a sacrifice fly and Jake Mastrangeli doubled and had 2 RBI.

In the second game, King doubled, homered and drove in 3 runs. Cory Kay hit 2 homers and had 4 RBI and Rick Perotti homered, doubled and had 2 RBI.

Mastrangeli went 2-for-3 and Lou Cairo drove in 2 runs as Viator broke it open with a 7-run seventh. Winner Robert Romano (4-0) allowed 2 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings and had 10 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Maine West, Hersey split: A 5-run eighth inning gave Maine West (11-7) a 7-2 win in the first game but Hersey (13-4) came back to win the second game 11-1 in 5 innings.

Maine West extended its winning streak to six games in the opener as sophomore James Duckman broke the tie with a two-strike, safety squeeze bunt to score Ryan Ross (3-for-4) off Hersey's Steve Danielak (5-1). Tommy Ross had a 2-run single and Paul Solka (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Mike Farias had RBI singles in the inning.

Tony Meza allowed 5 hits in 7 innings for the win and got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh with a double play. Danielak had 7 strikeouts in 72/3 innings.

In the second game, Danielak's sophomore brother Mike threw a 1-hitter for his first varsity victory. Solka had a first-inning RBI single as Danielak had 8 strikeouts and no walks in 5 innings.

Domenic Biagini went 3-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI and Steve Sgrignoli drove in 2 runs for the Huskies.

Barrington goes 1-1: Barrington (11-9) lost the opener of its quad 4-2 to New Trier but rebounded for a 7-1 win over Jones.

Junior Greg Gerrard had 7 strikeouts and allowed 3 hits in 5 innings for his first varsity win. John O'Connell went 2-for-3 with a 3-run homer in the second inning and Derek Foderaro went 2-for-3.

Jackson Lundmark allowed only 2 earned runs and had 6 strikeouts and no walks against New Trier. Anthony Brignola and Ricky Alfonso had 2 hits apiece.

Elk Grove 7, Maine South 5: Winner Ryan Daubenspeck doubled and Kyle Pfister tripled for Elk Grove (7-12).

Downers South 3, Leyden 2: A tough third inning where Downers Grove South scored 3 runs was enough for junior Nick Burdi to outduel Leyden's Dan Savas in the West Suburban Gold matchup.

Burdi, who has already committed to Lousiville, and the Illinois State-bound Savas threw 5-hitters. But single run in the top of the second and third weren't enough for Leyden (13-6, 6-4) as its 7-game winning streak ended.

Savas (3-3) finished with 9 strikeouts and no walks. Carlos Olavarria had 2 hits.

Glenbrook North 11, Fremd 6: Kevin Ciardiello doubled for Fremd (8-7) in the loss.

Glenbrook South 7, Prospect 3: The Knights (9-6) lost their second straight game.
