Huntley's Popenfoose dominates McHenry County meet

It is almost scary to think about how good Huntley senior Marcus Popenfoose might be by the time the state track and field finals come around in late May.

Still rounding into form, the Auburn recruit claimed first place honors in the discus and shot put at the McHenry County Meet held at Crystal Lake Central Thursday night.

The running events will take place at Central Friday beginning at 5 p.m.

Popenfoose tossed the shot put 56 feet, 111/2 inches and won the discus with a throw of 190-7. It was his second straight county title in both events.

"I still have mechanical things I have to work on with the shot," said Popenfoose. "I had too many scratches. But, everything is fixable. I like the way I am throwing the discus, but can still get better."

Huntley, which is third after 6 events with 33 1/2 points, also got a third-place effort from Cody Cameron (shot put).

Jacobs, which is fifth with 10 points, got a second-place finish from David Grady In the triple jump.

McHenry leads with 51 points followed by Crystal Lake Central with 35 points.

Crystal Lake South is seventh with a score of 8 points paced by fourth-place finishes from Kenny King (long jump) and Chaz Barnett (pole vault).

Cary-Grove's lone point of the evening came on a sixth-place finish by Josh Freeman in the shot put.
