Saturday's Fox Valley roundup

It was a good Saturday to be in Ashland, Ohio if you were a Bartlett softball player or fan.

The Hawks, a day after dropping a 2-1 decision to defending Ohio state champ Elyria, came back strong Saturday, going 3-0 at the Wendy's Spring Classic.

"It was an excellent trip," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "Lake Park went 4-0 out here so the Upstate Eight (Conference) had a 7-1 weekend in Ohio."

Wolfsmith was more than happy with the way his team played in wins of 5-4 over West Liberty-Salem, 14-8 over Colonel Crawford and 6-3 over North Royalton, especially after heading to Ohio on the heels of tough UEC losses to St. Charles North and Waubonsie Valley during the week.

"The girls played extremely well," Wolfsmith said. "They really responded after a couple tough losses."

Lisa Matsie's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning won the game over West Liberty-Salem, driving home pinch-runner Cassie Hernandez. Nicole Beck had driven in Nicole Palmer with the tying run earlier in the inning. Matsie also added a home run in the game, Beck was 2-for-4 and senior standout Callie Dennison went 3-for-4. Dennison also earned the win in the circle, striking out eight and walking just one while allowing 8 hits.

The Hawks then rapped out 15 hits in beating Colonel Crawford. Kaylyn Zierke was 3-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI, Stevie Treskow was 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI and Sammie Treskow went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI for Bartlett. Alicia Salata pitched the first three innings and earned the win, striking out five and allowing 3 hits. Amanda Montbriand and Tori Burke also pitched for Bartlett.

In the win over North Royalton, Bartlett (10-5) scored 5 times in the second inning, which was highlighted by a grand slam home run from Dennison. Lauren Chuchvara was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Hawks.

The Butler-bound Dennison (8-3) scattered 7 hits and had 6 strikeouts with no walks to earn the win in the circle.

"We got contributions from a lot of people and some of our younger players came up and helped out," said Wolfsmith. "Callie led the way. She had a great weekend of pitching and hitting."

South Elgin 14, Jacobs 6: South Elgin snapped a 9-game losing streak by beating Jacobs in nonconference action. Katelyn Stonecipher went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI for the Storm (2-9), while Courtney Bosteder was 2-for-4, Rae Bosteder 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and Kara Rodriguez 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple and 3 RBI as the Storm pounded out 13 hits. Sara Jacobsen was 3-for-4 with a triple, Kara Arceneaux 3-for-3 with a double and Nicky Chapa had a triple to lead Jacobs (6-4). Sam Bolin picked up the win for South Elgin, allowing just 3 earned runs and striking out six. Amber Livingston suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles.
