Elk Grove sweeps Maine South
Elk Grove sweeps: Elk Grove improved to 13-2 with 8-0 and 10-3 nonconference wins over Maine South.
The visiting Grens won Game 1 behind a 4-hitter from sophomore Dani Goranson (8-1), who struck out 10 and walked one.
Jessica Balzano (4-for-4, triple, 4 RBI, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Goranson (2-for-4, 1 run), Olivia Roback (2-for-4, RBI, double), Amanda Gattone (2-for-3, double, 2 runs) and Rebecca Walz (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 runs) led the Grens, who also received a double from Devan Parkison.
Stephanie Maday (5-1) threw a 4-hitter in Game 2.
Balzano (3-for-5, 2 runs), Goranson (2-for-4, RBI), Roback (1-for-1, 2 walks, 3 RBI, 2-run homer in the first inning), Megan Keegan (1-for-3, 2 RBI, double), Elisa Payne (2-for-4, double, 2 runs) and Cailtin Kronforst (3-for-4, double) led the offense.
Roback and Walz (solo blast in the seventh) each belted their second homers of the season.
St. Viator splits: Junior Julie Sweeney (7-1) struck out nine to defeat visiting Bishop McNamara 8-7 in Game 1.
Abby Dickey (3 RBI, double), Bridget Urbanus (2 hits, double), Sweeney (2 hits, 2 RBI), Kristen Cozzi (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Amanda Presslak (3 hits, RBI) led the offense for the Lions (10-4).
In Game 2, McNamara collected 11 hits and 2 home runs to top the Lions 8-1 and pitcher Melanie Slawny (3-3),
Cozzi and Sweeney each had 2 hits for Viator.
Conant wins tourney: Conant (14-2) won the Woodstock tourney with a 3-0 record, defeating Lake Zurich 8-4, Woodstock 21-1 and Crystal Lake South 13-3 (five innings).
For the day, Cougars freshman catcher Miranda Cavin went 9-for-14, including a 4-for-4 effort with 4 RBI against CLS.
Also in that game, top Cougar hitters were Hilary O'Donnell (3-for-3, 2 stolen bases, 3 runs), Vicki McGuire (2-for-4 with the game-ending run), Paige Ward (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI), Sarah Pawlik (2-for-2 RBI, double) and Lauren Ambrose (2-for-3, triple, 3 RBI).
Kailee Prasbrig (6-0) notched wins over Lake Zurich and Crystal Lake South, and Briana Cavin (7-2) struck out 14 in the triumph against Woodstock.
Miranda Cavin blasted a 3-run homer against Lake Zurich.
Brian Cavin went 5-for-7 with 2 RBI and a double against Woodstock.
Rolling Meadows sweeps: Mustangs coach Tony Wolanski played all 12 girls in each game (27-8 and 27-5 wins at Maine East) and each player got at least 6 at-bats for the day.
The Mustangs (7-5) had 23 hits in Game 1 and 24 in Game 2.
Junior Kayla Mueller (1-0) got her first win by throwing 5 of the 6 innings of the opener,
Abby Matayka (4-for-6, 5 RBI, double), Maryclare Loughery (4-for-4, 5 RBI, double) and Sam Anderson (4-for-6, 3 RBI) paced the Mustangs, who also received doubles from Natalie Cannizzo and Emily Skorin.
Josie Suchecki (3-4) picked up the win in Game 2 as she went the first 4 innings. Sara Brunlieb pitched the fifth.
Top hitters were Matayka (3-for-4, 3 RBI, home run, double), Loughery (5-for-5, 5 RBI, 2 doubles), Skorin (4-for-5, 3 RBI, triple, double) and Anderson (3-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 doubles).
Suchecki, Kelly Sarussi, Brunlieb and Kelly Keyzer also had doubles.
Meadows senior second baseman Loughery has now hit safely in 29 consecutive games.
Buffalo Grove drops two: Visiting Libertyville won 5-1 and 6-3 in the nonconference doubleheader.
Bison junior Andrea DiPrima struck out five and did not give up an earned run in the opener. She was also 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, while teammate Sara Penelle went 2-for-4.
Freshman Megan Fu pitched all 7 innings for BG in Game 2 and struck out two with 4 walks.
Erin Barton (2-for-4, 2 runs) and DiPrima (3-for-3, double) led the Bison offense.
Maine West splits: Alyssa Bojarski (2-for-3) and Alli Ellwood (2-for-4, double) led the Maine West offense in a 4-1 nonconference loss to host Kaneland in Game 1.
But the Warriors bounced back for an 8-6 triumph in Game 2 as freshman Ariel Valles (4-0) notched the win while going 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI.
Bojarski (2-for-4, 2 runs, triple, double), Katie Fitzgerald (2-for-4, RBI, double), Kim Morales (2-for-4) and Vanessa Bagneschi (double) were other key hitters for Maine West (6-8).
Mundelein 7, Hersey 6: A 2-run homer for Mundelein tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and the host Mustangs won it with a run in the eighth.
Losing pitcher Aubrey Fulton belted a triple for the Huskies (3-11), while teammates Haley Henriksen, Alyssa Kieffer and Valerie Burke each doubled.
Prospect drops two: The Knights (3-8) dropped a pair of 1-run nonconference decisions to York 4-3 and 5-4.
Prospect loaded the bases (Sam Mangrum, Nikki Surico and Mary Styzek) in the top of the seventh with two outs in Game 1.
Styzek and Amanda Mlikan each went 2-4.
Prospect outhit the Dukes 7-5 in Game 2. Knights sophomore Hanna Lythberg struck out four in 7 innings.
Mlikan went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Palatine splits: Stevenson scored 8 runs in the top of the seventh to top Palatine 10-7 in Game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader.
Katie Mnichowicz (2-for-5), Katie Scovic (2-for-5) and Lauren Logan (triple) led the Pirates.
The Pirates (9-6) took the second game 6-3 as Chrissy Roto (4-5) notched the win with 3 strikeouts.
Sam Salomone (2-for-4) doubled in the third and fifth innings, and Joanne Jablonski doubled in the fourth. Logan went 3-for-3.
