Stevenson rallies past Libertyville
Stevenson's baseball team exacted some revenge on Libertyville on Thursday.
The Patriots scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth and hung on for an 8-7 win in a rematch of the North Suburban Lake Divsion teams' thrilling, extra-inning game from last Friday.
Blake Fiedelman tossed 3 scoreless innings in relief for Stevenson (10-1, 3-1). He struck out three, walked one and scattered 3 hits in improving to 2-0.
Stevenson's offense was led by Pat Wilson (2-for-2, double, 2 RBI). Kyle Ruchim and Ed Heiser also doubled.
Libertyville (7-4, 3-1), which outhit Stevenson 12-9, received a home run from Chad Uhler. Brad Martin and A.J. Schurr had doubles.
Lake Zurich 7, Fremd 3: Ben Gullo pitched 52/3 innings for the host Bears, who built a 7-0 lead after five innings.
Gullo (2-0) pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning. He wound up being charged for all 3 Fremd runs. He struck out six and walked one.
"Ben Gullo threw a gem," Lake Zurich coach Gary Simon said. "He had the Vikings off balance and was hitting his spots."
Parker Asmann (3-for-4), Anthony Orlando (3-for-3, double, 3 RBI) and Danny Minogue (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) led a 10-hit attack, which also included a home run by Chris Baumann.
Mike Irgang pitched 11/3 innigs in relief of Gullo to help Lake Zurich (7-8) secure the win.
"We cut down our miscues, which reflects in the final score," Simon said.
Carmel 9, Wauconda 1: The Corsairs pounded out 5 extra-base hits, including a home run by Chris Divarco, in the nonconference game.
Carmel (6-2) also received triples from Kyle Bessa, Nick Battalini (3-for-3) and Derek Jordan.
Jimmy Spagna went 3-for-4 with a double and earned the win on the mound. Spagna went the distance, striking out 10 and yielding only 2 hits.
Jeff Jackson tripled for Wauconda (9-5).
