Friday's Fox Valley roundup

The St. Edward softball team opened the Suburban Christian Blue season Friday with a big 2-1 win on the road over defending conference champion St. Francis.

The Green Wave (4-0, 1-0) carried a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning and were able to hang on to remain undefeated on the season.

Tarah McShane and Sarah Field picked up the Green Wave's only hits on the night while freshman Kali Kossakowski and junior Kelsey Richmond each drove in a run. Field also earned her fourth victory on the year as she tossed a 3-hitter, gave up no earned runs, 1 walk and struck out 6.

Cary-Grove 3, Johnsburg 2: The Trojans (4-2) broke a 2-2 tie heading into the seventh inning and were able to hold on to secure this nonconference victory in a Fox Valley Conference crossover game at Johnsburg. Lindsay Efflandt (4-1) threw a complete game as she gave up just 4 hits while striking out 12 for the win. Abbe Wineckoski (1-for-3) paced the Trojans as she drove in 2 runs while Colette Roth added 2 doubles and Taylor Dunne recorded 1 double.

Christian Liberty Academy 16, Westminster Christian 13: The Warriors (0-2) came up just short on their comeback effort as they were down 15-5 in the top of the fourth before pulling within 2 runs. Hannah Graves suffered the loss in the circle as she struck out 2. Katie Moeller provided an offensive spark for the Warriors as she went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with an inside the park home run, 3 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Graves also contributed at the plate with a double and a run scored.

Fremd 17, Jacobs 1: The Golden Eagles (1-2) were unable to get the offense going and surrendered 17 runs as they fell to softball powerhouse Fremd at home in this nonconference game. Kelsey Peterson was able to get the Golden Eagles on the board in the fourth inning as she hit an RBI double for 1 of Jacobs' 2 hits. Amber Livingston suffered the loss in the circle, pitching 2 innings while giving up 7 earned runs and striking out 1.

St. Charles East 8, Streamwood 2: The Sabres (4-5, 0-2) lacked consistency on defense as they committed 4 errors which led to 3 of the Saints' runs in this Upstate Eight Conference loss at home. Delaney O'Malley went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in the Sabres' 2 runs. Jenna Szabo suffered the loss throwing a complete game.

Waubonsie Valley 9, Elgin 1: The Maroons (3-8, 0-2) will have to wait another day to pick up their first Upstate Eight Conference victory as they were defeated by the visiting Warriors. Elgin scored its only run in the sixth inning as Jaclyn Navarro hit an RBI double to score Brandi Hernandez, who reached on a single. Kellee Conquest suffered the loss for the Maroons as she gave up 3 earned runs and 5 hits while striking out 1 in 5 innings of work.

Burlington Central 16, Winnebago 0: Jet Kein tossed a 1-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk as the Rockets (3-4) rolled in this Big Northern crossover game at Winnebago. Ashley Scheffler was 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored for Central, while Emily Bell (3-for-3, 2B, RBI), Abby Morrow (2-for-2, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Sam Gruner (3B, 2 RBI), Hannah Nelson (hit) and Megan Minehart (hit) each contributed to the offense.
