Police investigating theft from Crystal Lake South High School

A Crystal Lake South High School employee is on administrative leave amid a criminal investigation into allegations someone misappropriated or stole funds from the school, police and school officials confirmed today.

Neither the school district nor police would name the target of the probe, citing the pending investigation and the fact no one has been charged.

The Crystal Lake Police Department launched the investigation about two weeks ago after officials with Crystal Lake High School District 155 notified them of the suspected theft, police said in a brief statement. The department and school district are working together to substantiate or refute the claims, the statement reads.

The McHenry County State's Attorney's Office also is reviewing the ongoing investigation to determine what, if any, prosecution is warranted, according to the police statement.

District 155 spokesman Jeff Puma issued a statement Thursday saying the district is conducting its own internal investigation into the allegations.

Puma earlier said he could not confirm or deny whether the investigation centers around a specific employee named by multiple Daily Herald sources over the past week, but said that person remains employed by the district.
