St. Viator battles back, tops Highland Park

St. Viator powered its way out of an early hole in Tuesday's nonconference baseball game with visiting Highland Park.

Louie Cairo, Julian Sipiora and Rick Perotti homered as the Lions (3-2) overcame a 5-run deficit in the second inning and went on to a 13-6 victory in Arlington Heights.

The Lions trailed 5-0 with two outs in the bottom of the second when Cairo hit a 3-run homer, his second in two days. An error and a double by winning pitcher Jack Czeszewski set up Sipiora's go-ahead 3-run blast.

Perotti hit a solo shot in the third and Viator broke it open with a 5-run fifth as Robert Romano and Cory Kay had 2-run singles. Sipiora went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Tyler Ford allowed 1 hit in 2 scoreless innings for the save.

Leyden 8, Morton 1: Jeremy Stawychny threw a complete-game 6-hitter and No. 9 hitting junior John Marino continued his hot hitting with a 3-run homer as Leyden (6-3, 2-1) took two of three from Morton in the West Suburban Gold series. Stawychny had 7 strikeouts and no walks.

Naperville Central 4, Palatine 3: After Palatine (5-5) tied it with 2 runs in the top of the seventh, Naperville Central answered to win it in the bottom of the inning. Mike Luschen doubled for the Pirates.

Meadows 3, Niles North 3 (7 inn.): Steve Rickerson, Kevin Cwynar and Chris Varilek went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Rolling Meadows (2-4) in a game called after seven innings because of darkness. Sophomore Eric Lowe pitched into the seventh and Pat McGinn helped preserve the tie with runners at first and second and two out when he picked up a line drive off his leg and got the out at first.
