Huntley survives physical match with Cary-Grove
It seems the more physical the play the better Huntley and junior standout forward Aimee Wronski perform.
In a game that featured brutal collisions on both ends the Red Raiders, led by 2 goals from Wronski were, able to defeat Cary-Grove 3-1 in a hard-fought Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls soccer game in Huntley Thursday afternoon.
"Cary-Grove is a very physical team and this was a very physical game but we fought through it and got a good win against a good team," said Wronski. "We like the physical play and won't back down from anyone."
Wronski iced the Red Raiders' victory with a goal off a perfectly placed pass from Alyse Williams off a direct kick with 3.7 seconds left in the game.
Huntley (8-0, 1-0) scored 2 unanswered goals in the first half, one by Aimee Wronski and one by Aimee's sister Corinne, and led the Trojans (3-2, 1-1) 2-0 after 40 minutes. Emily Konior and Rachel Chapuis assisted on the goals.
Cary-Grove's lone goal came on a Huntley own goal with 8:56 left to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Trojans had a golden opportunity to tie the game with 1:49 remaining but Red Raider goalie Kaytlyn Owens made a save on a rifle shot from Jamie Simon.
"Tuesday against Harlem we played one of the best soccer games I have seen a Huntley team play since I have been here," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "We had great ball movement and played very well as a team. We had some gorgeous passes, Today, we were too spread out and I think because it was the first Valley game we played tight. Give Cary credit. They won every ball and were a lot of the reason we didn't play as well as we are capable of playing."
Huntley outshot Cary-Grove 11-5.
"Huntley is a very good team and they took care of their opportunities," said Cary-Grove coach Ray Krystal. "I praise our effort. We just need to learn from this game."
Huntley goalies Owens and Sara Hoffman each played a half and each had 2 saves.
"During the regular season we will split the duties between our two goalies," said Grabner. "They are both college level goalies and will both get equal chance to play. We will see if both are playing at a high level we will split time with them in the tournament."
