Stos pitches Wauconda past Prairie Ridge

Wauconda's softball team plans on building on last season's success.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start Wednesday in Crystal Lake, defeating a tough Prairie Ridge squad 4-1 behind Kayla Stos' complete-game 3-hitter.

Wauconda, which won 23 games last season, received an RBI single from Michelle Meyer in the fourth, a run-scoring double from Cara Nance in the fifth and an RBI base hit from freshman Megan Luchowski in the sixth.

Kendra Wedl had a double and scored the Bulldogs' first run in the first inning.

Mundelein 3, Grayslake N. 2: The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Ted Juske Jr. won in his debut as head coach.

Justina Doll, whose RBI single in the sixth pulled Mundelein even, led off the Mustangs' eighth with a triple and scored two outs later when freshman Erin Kennelly's groundball was not fielded cleanly.

Mundelein pitcher Hillary Bunnelle, who made a defensive gem to get out of second-and-third jam in the seventh, earned the win.

Kristina Gandy suffered the tough-luck loss. Grayslake North, which was also playing its season opener, got a double from freshman Kelsey Borders. Gandy had an RBI groundout.

Vernon Hills 4, Deerfield 0: Megan Meline fired a 4-hit shutout with 4 strikeouts for the Cougars.

Christina Oberrieder went 2-for-2 and Anya Mollenhauer was 2-for-3 for Vernon Hills (2-1). Lauren Yacullo had a triple.

Grayslake Central 13, Round Lake 0: Rachel Perkowitz doubled twice, tripled and knocked in 5 runs for the Rams, who won their first game.

Tayler Janda pitched a 5-inning complete game, allowing 2 hits and striking out four. Claire Brennan scored 3 runs for Grayslake Central (1-3), and Anna Strickland and Kati Brew each had 3 hits.

For Round Lake (0-1), Shaila Sanchez singled and drew a walk.

Cary-Grove 10, Carmel 0: Cary-Grove freshman Lindsey Efflandt threw a 2-hitter in a six-inning game, dropping the Corsairs to 1-1.
