Snelten pitches Lakes past Harvard
D.J. Snelten is going to pitch in the Big Ten, and the senior provided a glimpse of his talent Tuesday.
Snelten, a 6-foot-6 lefty who's signed with Minnesota, struck out nine batters over 3 innings, as Lakes' baseball team opened its season with an 11-3 win over host Harvard in six innings.
Snelten yielded 2 hits and 1 earned run. He walked one and hit a batter.
Lakes' offense was provided by Nick Traska (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Chris Hoffman (3-run double) and Andrew Tubek (double, 2 runs, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases).
Belvidere N. 5, Wauconda 2: Eric Maki homered for the Bulldogs in their season opener. Dan Tanzillo and Kevin Fessler had doubles.
Libertyville 4, Carmel 1: The Wildcats (2-0) received extra-base hits from Tyler Schweigert (double), Chad Uhler (double), Josh Prochotsky (double), Nathan Clark (triple) and Brandon Fowkes (triple).
Joey Eichmann earned his second win in as many decisions.
Carmel fell to 0-2.
Mundelein 3, Grayslake N. 1: Matt Risdon homered in the top of the eighth, as the Mustangs improved to 2-0.
Risdon, winning pitcher Michael O'Donoghue (double, triple) and Doug Lewis (triple) each had a pair of hits for Mundelein.
Ed Tatera doubled for Grayslake North.
Grayslake Central 13, Richmond-Burton 2: Joe Schaiper went 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, and the Rams received 2 hits apiece from Kevin DeRue (double) and Mike Gentile in their season opener.
Hofstra-bound Angelo Gargano and Andrew Hosford added doubles for Grayslake Central, which got 6 strikeouts over 4 innings from Southern Illinois-bound Matt Murphy.
"It was nice to see the quality at-bats we had today," Rams coach Troy Whalen said. "Our guys did a great job in taking the ball up the middle and working good hitting counts.
Murphy allowed only an infield singled.
"Murph was very efficient with 41 pitches over 4 innings," Whalen said.
Barrington 4, Vernon Hills 2: Tyler Coppney had an RBI triple for the Cougars, who saw the Broncos score 3 runs in the second inning.
Cesar Gallegos had a quality appearance in relief for Vernon Hills, pitching 3 scoreless innings. He didn't allow a hit, while striking out two.
