Cary-Grove's defense stifles Huntley
Cary-Grove scored 3 points in the third quarter, shot 32 percent from the field and committed 23 turnovers.
The Trojans will have better offensive performances.
Cary-Grove defeated Huntley with tenacious, unrelenting and stifling defense.
Because of the Trojans' stellar defensive effort, Huntley managed only 10 field goals, shot only 22 percent from the field and scored only 24 points in 32 minutes of play.
The result was a 47-24 Cary-Grove win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Huntley Wednesday night.
"Our defense was very good tonight," said Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert. "We have a lot of kids with long arms and that makes our press effective and we did a good job of stopping their inside game."
The Trojans (18-1, 5-0) seized control of the game in the first quarter on a putback by Olivia Jakubicek and a long 3-pointer from Liz Bart that allowed the Trojans to jump out to a 5-0 lead with 6 minutes left in the opening quarter.
Cary-Grove never looked back.
Huntley (8-9, 2-3), which made only 10-of-46 from the floor, got on the scoreboard on a layup from Carly Goede with 5:22 left to make the score 5-2.
The Trojans bounced back and took control of the game with a 10-0 run. Making 5-of-5 shots from the floor, the Trojans extended a 3-point lead to 13. Claire Jakubicek and Olivia Jakubicek scored 4 points each during the pivotal run as Cary-Grove led 15-2 with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Trojans' biggest lead was 20, 30-10, after a layup by Bart with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
Despite a horrid third quarter, in which the Trojans made only 1-of-10 from the floor, committed 7 turnovers and scored only 3 points, Huntley never challenged the visitors.
"It was a very disappointing effort on our part," said Huntley coach Steve Raethz. "We played well the last 4 minutes and you can't do that in a 32-minute game against a quality team like Cary-Grove. We defended poorly tonight. They got way too many easy baskets in transition. "
Claire Jakubicek scored 14 points with 10 rebounds while her freshman sister Olivia tallied 12 points with 8 boards for the winners.
"I have gotten used to playing at this level," said Olivia Jakubicek. "I have been accepted by the older players and I am just trying to fit in. Tonight, we played good defense and got the loose balls."
Goede and Katherine Lowery paced Huntley with 6 points each.
