Jacobs' boys basketball team certainly had all its checks balanced in posting an impressive 75-55 win over the Wolves in the final game of the 2009 Jacobs Holiday Classic Saturday afternoon.
"I thought we played very well," said Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle. "Our half court defense was very good and we had good balanced scoring. Our half court defense was pretty effective."
Connecting on 30-of-50 shots from the field for 60 percent, the Golden Eagles (3-9) placed four players in double digits, led by 17 points from Mike Peterson. Sean Meyer scored 13 while Matt Schmidt (all-tournament) and Nick Hofman scored 12 apiece.
Jacobs, which forced PR into 32 turnovers, held Ljunggren to 11 points, on 3-of-20 shooting from the field. The Prairie Ridge senior sharpshooter, who didn't have a field goal in the first half, was 2-of-9 from 3-point range.
"Sean Meyer did an outstanding job on Ljunggren," said Hinkle. "He put a lot of pressure on him and didn't let him get good shots. When Sean wasn't in there we had different guys on him and they all did a great job on him."
Leading, 33-22 at halftime, the Golden Eagles grabbed control of the game early in the third quarter by scoring the first 8 points of the second half. With Meyer and Schmidt scoring 2 baskets apiece, Jacobs extended its 11-point halftime lead to 19, 41-22, with 5:52 left in the third quarter.
The closest PR got was 11, 44-33, after a 3-pointer by Kevin Kaczmarski with 1:25 left in the third quarter.
"We played hard the entire game and played good defense," said Schmidt. "We are starting to mesh as a team and the chemistry is very good. We just need to continue to get better. "
Sam Mandl led Prairie Ridge with 19 points.
