Lakes, Antioch gets new principals:

Stephen Plank and Eric Ernd have been approved to start as the new principals at Lakes Community High School and Antioch Community High School, respectively. The Antioch High School District 117 school board approved the hirings at a meeting Thursday. They will start in their new posts in the summer. They will replace Jim McKay and Mike Nekritz, who will become co-superintendents when current Superintendent Jay Sabatino retires at the end of the school year. Plank is currently the fine arts chair at Stevenson High School and Ernd is an assistant principal at Wauconda High School.

Arrest made in hit and run:

A 26-year-old Waukegan man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run accident. Waukegan police said Juan C. Lopez of the 900 block of Pine Street, was involved in the accident Sept. 8. According to police, Lopez was traveling west on Brookside Drive when his Chevy Silverado pickup truck struck a 3-year-old child who ran into the street on the 1500 block. After striking the child, Lopez continued on without stopping to check on the child or to report the accident, police said. The child was flown to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in critical condition and remained hospitalized several weeks before being released. Lopez was apprehended after police received a tip he may have been the driver. He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Class 2 felony. He was held in Lake County jail on $50,000 bond.

Gurnee cops to ring bells:

Gurnee Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 266 is stepping up because of an apparent shortage of Salvation Army bell-ringers in the village. Uniformed police will volunteer to ring bells and solicit donations on behalf of the Salvation Army from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Jewel-Osco store off Hunt Club Road just south of Grand Avenue.
