Geneva just misses setting school record
Using the reflection of the Mack Olson Gym trophy case as a mirror, Geneva sophomore gymnast Kaitlyn Kanarowski styled her hair before heading to the mat to perform her floor exercise routine.
Apparently she wanted to look her best while the Vikings posted a season-best score of 136.6 and came within three-tenths of tying the school record of 136.9.
Kanarowski claimed the all-around title with a 34.6 as Geneva beat Glenbard South (131.25) and Glenbard East (126) in Wednesday's triangular meet.
"I was really pleased with how everyone contributed," Geneva coach Kim Hostman said "They're a real tight knit group that's fun to coach and if they keep working hard and hitting their marks they should continue to do really well."
Emily Ott was certainly on target for Geneva. The junior, who was a floor exercise specialist a year ago, led the Vikings on vault (8.8) and made the biggest splash on beam and floor exercise where she posted a 9.4 and 9.55 respectively.
"I haven't done beam in four years, but I've worked real hard in the offseason to get where I'm at," Ott said. "On floor the biggest difference is confidence. I've added a couple new passes, but more than anything I'm more confident this year."
Freshman Delaney Wood posted an all-around total of 33.3, Alycia Hostman scored an even 32 and Cami Pfetzer placed third on bars and in the floor exercise for the Vikings.
"We had a weak day on bars, but we made up for it on beam," Kim Hostman said. "We almost hit a 35 on beam today which is outstanding and after the mistakes on bars they knew they had to make up for it and I was very pleased with how they did."
Senior Michelle Kohout led Glenbard South. She won vault with an 8.9, her best total of the season, and placed second in the all-around with a 34.
"I was really happy with my vault and floor tonight," Kohout said. "I find myself focusing so much on the little stuff and with my sore knees it's hard to get everything to work perfectly."
The Raiders received solid contributions from Ashley Ellis in the all-around (32.85) and Meghan O'Malley on vault (8.85).
"I was proud of everyone tonight," Kohout said. "We got a new season high score and everyone's working together and staying consistent."
Glenbard East received strong performances from Emily Costenaro and Jessica Griffin. Costenaro scored an 8.85 on vault to tie for second place.
"I changed my vault and this was my first vault to score it," Costenaro said. "I was pretty happy to do it."
Griffin took third on beam and in the all-around.
"I kept having little errors on beam but finally stuck it," Griffin said. "I had been sticking it in practice and finally stuck it in a meet
