Big assists from Hoffman Estates' Lukowicz
Kelsey Lukowicz did a little bit of everything for her Hoffman Estates girls basketball team Monday night against visiting St. Viator.
The 5-foot-8 senior guard collected 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 5 assists as the Hawks won their second straight game with a 42-30 victory over the Lions in the nonconference game.
Of her 5 assists, three came on all of the Hawk's 3-pointers - two by Megan Bernardoni (11 points) and one by Jada Stotts (10 points, 5 rebounds).
"Kelsey had a very nice game," said Hawks coach Mike Nocella, whose team improved to 6-3 with another nonconference match today against Larkin. "She played very consistently."
Lukowicz's fastbreak layup gave Hoffman an 8-4 lead in the first quarter.
She found Bernardoni begin the arc for a 3-pointer in the second quarter which extended the hosts' advantage to 12-6.
"We just really played well as a team and we passed the ball well," Lukowicz said. "Everyone was where they were supposed to be. There'd be one person to drive and everyone else was spread out in the right spots."
With Stotts and junior Precious Ogunleye (10 points, 9 rebounds) in some foul trouble, sophomore Haley Worman (3 rebounds) put forth some valuable minutes off the bench.
"With her long arms, defensively she is able to deflect a lot of passes," Nocella said. "We don't lose anything defensively with her on the floor. She's very smart."
Viator (7-3) got to within 21-20 early in the second half when senior Ronnie Mack hit back-to-back buckets but the Hawks answered with a 7-1 run, sparked by Stotts' 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup by Ogunleye.
"After a couple of losses to Barrington and Prospect, we want to pick ourselves back up," Ogunleye said. "I just couldn't pick up that fifth foul (got her fourth with 7:14 left in the game) and I had to play defense at the end."
Ogunleye hit two big back-to-back layups midway through the final quarter to stretch the Hawks lead to 36-28.
St. Viator, which hosts Marina Catholic in an East Suburban Catholic Conference test at 7 p.m., was led by Mack (13 points) and Meghan Malone (7).
"Hoffman did a great job," said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness.
"We had some good looks. Holding them to 42 points was a good defensive effort. We just need to make more baskets."
Fremd 53, Glenbard North 35: Fremd improved to 7-3 as Taylor Glassmann (11 points), Bridget Gray (10), Ashley McConnell (8) and Gianna Abruzzo (8) led the Vikings' offensive scoring.
Glassmann had 3 3-pointers while Gray had a pair.
