St. Edward shakes slow start to down Marian Central

Things didn't start out all that well for the St. Edward girls basketball team Tuesday night, but they finished just fine for the Green Wave.

St. Edward fell behind visiting Marian Central 14-5 after one quarter, but then the Green Wave found their shooting touch, outscoring the Hurricanes 21-4 in the second quarter en route to a 48-35 Suburban Christian Conference crossover win in Elgin.

"We had really good intensity coming out, we just couldn't buy a bucket," said St. Edward coach Michelle Dawson. "In the second quarter we started pressing them a little bit and we got some key turnovers that sparked us."

St. Edward (5-3) didn't have a double-digit scorer in the win but the Wave did get consistent scoring. Enza Ranallo (6 rebounds) and Maddie Kerr each had 9 points, while Breaunna Medinger and Paige Gannon (6 rebounds) scored 8 points each. Alex Lee (9 rebounds) added 7 points for the winners, while Callie Johnson collected 8 rebounds.

"We rebounded much better tonight," said Dawson, whose team travels to Lombard Thursday to play Montini, the No. 1 ranked team in the Daily Herald Top 20.

Latin School 49, Elgin Academy 31: The Hilltoppers (2-3) were unable to get the offense going as they fell at home to Independent School League foe Latin. Lauren Steimle and Alyssa Pena both scored double-digits with 12 and 11 points respectively for the Hilltoppers.

Grant 49, Elgin 36: The Maroons (1-7) hung close for 3 quarters before Grant scored 17 fourth-quarter points to pull away and hand Elgin a tough nonconference loss at Chesbrough Field House. Danielle Lawry paced the Maroons with 11 points while Briana Hamilton chipped in 9 points.

Johnsburg 52, Crystal Lake South 45: The Gators (3-6) came up just short as they fell to Johnsburg on the road in this Fox Valley Conference crossover matchup. Michelle Gaede led the Gators with 13 points to go along with 5 rebounds while Jenny Hanrahan added 11 points and 6 rebounds.
