Ring in the holidays with Merry Cary
Cary is ringing in the holiday season on Sunday with Merry Cary, an event featuring a parade, Santa and his elves, wagon rides and a host of other holiday related activities.
The parade, a local prelude to Christmas, is one of the largest in McHenry County.
It steps off at 1 p.m. on West Main Street in the downtown and will include the Pearl Harbor Memorial AMVETS, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the local police department and of course, Santa Claus on a horse-drawn sleigh.
After the parade, a petting zoo on Jandus Road, pony rides in the Harris Bank parking lot and other entertainment follow.
Everything is free and open to the public.
Be sure to visit downtown merchants while you're down there.

Calling all artists: Algonquin will be installing new bike racks around town in commercial areas and parks as an effort promote bike riding as a means of saving energy.
This initiative will help the village secure a Bicycle Friendly Community status from the League of American Bicyclists.
To that end, the village needs artists willing to design unique bike racks.
If the design is selected, the artist would be given two months to build the bike rack - the design and actual product will need to meet specific guidelines.
There are two competitions, one for a signature bike rack and another to include art on a U-shaped bike rack.
Racks will be judged based on their theme, functionality, constructability and maintenance requirements.
The artists receive a $2,000 stipend for the signature design and a $200 for the standard design - artists are responsible for all materials and construction costs, except the bike rack, in the case of the U-shaped rack.
Submittals are due by Feb. 1.

Congratulations, Trojans: A big shout out to the Cary-Grove Trojan football team, which became the division 6A state champions over the weekend in Champaign, crushing Providence Catholic 34-17.
Maybe they can teach the Chicago Bears a thing or two about winning.
