Tuesday's Cook County roundup

Maddie Swan, one of the top attackers for Hersey's volleyball team this fall, attacked on the basketball floor Tuesday night like never before.

The 5-foot-10 senior forward scored 14 points with 9 rebounds and 9 blocked shots to help Hersey post a 50-36 victory over visiting Barrington in the Mid-Suburban League girls basketball crossover.

Swan's big game was complemented by the always-dangerous junior guard Megan Rogowski, who tossed home a game-high 20 points as Hersey improved to 3-2.

"Maddie was fantastic," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "I'd say it was her best game in three years on the varsity. Defense, offense, she was great."

Swan scored 6 of her points in the final quarter for the Huskies, who led 31-21 at the break.

"Even the shots she didn't block, she altered," Fendley said. "She was fun to watch.

"She bailed us out more than once when kids got beat on the perimeter."

Senior guard Julia Fredian hit a pair of 3-pointers for the winner while teammates Andrea Perkins and Eileen Zydek each chipped in 4 points.

Barrington was led by Sam Maasarani (9 points from three 3-pointers), Emily Harris (8 points), Sarah Mass (6) and Abby Kirchoff (6).

"Barrington is a good team," Fendley said. "They have a lot of good athletes and they'll win a lot of games. We wanted to re-establish our ball control which we did not have in our last loss (Marian Catholic). I'm so happy we were able to get a win this time."

Wheeling 59, Palatine 29: Janelle Cannon (20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals), Bianca Szafarowicz (15 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists), Kellie Kuzmanic (8 points, 9 rebounds) and Stephanie Kuzmanic (8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) helped lead Wheeling to its sixth win in seven games.

"We came out a little flat," said Wheeling coach Shelly Wiegel. "During half time we talked about stepping up the defensive intensity and taking more pride in our play. The girls responded."

Wheeling held Palatine to 4 points in the first seven minutes of the third quarter and at one point went on a 12-0 run. Cannon had 14 points in the third quarter.

"And she dished out some electric passes to Bianca and Stephanie," Weigel said. "In the fourth quarter, our defensive intensity was impressive.

"The second half of basketball was more like what is expected of the team every game. We needed that intensity and desire to carry into our game Friday. Larissa Aguero did a nice job off the bench (6 points)."

Palatine (1-4) was led by Katie Mnichowicz (9 points).

Rolling Meadows 36, Conant 24: Madelynn Conlin (15 points), Rene Poellinetz (8) and Ann Marie Lynch (6) led Rolling Meadows (4-2).

Kim Davis (8 points) hit a pair of 3-point baskets for the Cougars (2-4), who trailed at the 14-12.

Meadows outscored Conant 14-5 in the final period.

Buffalo Grove 57, Schaumburg 47 (OT): Buffalo Grove climbed back to .500 by outscoring the visiting Saxons 11-1 in overtime.

Senior forward Stacy Lialios led the Bison (3-3) with 13 point while KC Dunne scored 4 of her 11 points in the extra session.

Freshman Bailey North and senior Heather Nisbet each chipped in 8 points while Emily Georgoulis had 7 and Andrea DiPrima 6.

Pacing the Saxons (1-5) was sophomore Kelly Skorczewski (14 points) and senior Taylor Kosla (10). Sophomore Alyssa Saklak pulled down 14 rebounds with 7 points.

The Bison were 7-of-8 at the free throw line in the overtime.

"We are getting better," said Saxons coach Ashley Berggren. "It's just a matter of who will step up when we need to score."

Glenbrook South 57, Maine West 43: Visiting Maine West stands at 2-3 after the loss in the Central Suburban League crossover.
