Saturday's IHSA semifinal football playoff updates
Marist 17, Glenbard North 14 (Final)
In the Class 8A semifinals Saturday night, Glenbard North has broken out to a 7-0 lead over Marist on a 42-yard touchdown pass to Mike Carev from Tom Trafficanti. Mark Ng hit the PAT for the Panthers. Glenbard North carried that lead into halftime but then Marist tied the game Marist with 4:28 left in the third quarter when Dan Piko caught a 14-yard TD pass from Mike Perish. With 6:28 left in the game, Glenbard North's Evin Natick scored on a 3-yard run and Ng's kick put the Panthers ahead 14-7. Again Marist came back to tie when Perish ran in from 1 yard out with 2:59 left. Marist then won the game with 1 second to play on a 23-yard field goal by Ben Falloon.
Cary-Grove 40, Prairie Ridge 7 (Final)
In Class 6A, Cary-Grove's Chad McCarron returned an interception on the third play of the game, then the Trojans' Eric Chandler ran 21 yards for a touchdown and after two Nick Taylor kicks, C-G leads Prairie Ridge 14-0 in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Cary-Grove extended the lead when Jack McMullin forced a Prairie Ridge fumble, leading to a 4-yard Chandler TD run. Taylor's kick failed and the Trojans led 20-0. With 3:11 left in the first half, Tyler Krebs his McCarron with a 54-yard pass that led to a 1-yard TD run from Alex Hembrey and the Trojans now lead 27-0. To start the second half, Cary-Grove put together a 14-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 1-yard Krebs run and the Trojans now lead 33-0. Cary-Grove then put the game into running clock mode when Hembrey scored from 8 yards out and Taylor added another PAT kick for a 40-0 lead with 2:06 left in the third quarter. Prairie Ridge got on the board in the fourth quarter when John Henderson scored from 9 yards out and Matt Simak added the kick to make it 40-7. Cary-Grove (13-0) will play either Danville or Providence for the state championship at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Memorial Field in Champaign.
WW South 34, East St. Louis 15 (Final)
Courtney Molton ran 15 yards for a touchdown to give East St. Louis an early lead over the Tigers in Class 7A. WW South's Nick Immekus kicked field goals of 29 and 34 yuards to close the gap for WW South. The Tigers then took the lead on a 3-yard run from Julian Banuelos and a 3-yard run from Riley O'Toole. Imekus added both PAT kicks and the Tigers lead 20-7 in the third quarter. O'Toole then added a 1-yard run and Imekus another kick as the Tigers extended the lead to 27-7 early in the fourth quarter. Banuelos then added a 5-yard TD run and Imekus the kick for a 34-7 WWS lead. East St. Louis added a 36-yard TD pass from Detchauz Wray to Keante Miner and a 2-point run from Marcus Spranggins and WWS held a 34-15 lead late in the fourth quarter. WW South will play Glenbard West for the state championship next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
Montini 42, Woodstock 24 (Final)
Mike Liedtke ran 1 yard for a touchdown and Scott Rausch added the extra point kick as Woodstock took a 7-0 lead on Montini in the first quarter of their Class 5A semifinal in Lombard. The Broncos came back, though, with a 21-yard TD pass from Brandon Pechloff to Anthony Taylor to tie the game and they then took the lead 14-7 when Pechloff hit Christian Westerkamp with a 54-yard TD pass. Matt Kersten added both PAT kicks to put Montini up 14-7. Woodstock got a 32-yard field goal from Rausch to make it 14-10 but Montini tacked on another score when Westerkamp caught an 11-yard pass from Pechloff and Kersten added the kick. Montini leads 21-10 at halftime. Ryan Gorrell then added a 94-yard TD run for the Broncos and after Kersetn's kick, the Broncos now lead 28-10 in the third quarter. Montini's other Westerkamp, Jordan, then got into the act with a 29-yard TD run and after Kersten's kick the Broncos held a 35-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Jordan Westerkamp added another touchdown with a 64-yard reception from Pechloff just after Woodstock's Logan Kunvic had caught a 13-yard TD pass from Rausch. Montini leads 42-17 late in the game. Kevin Smith scored Woodstock's final TD on an 11-yard run. The Broncos will take on either Peoria Richwoods or Joliet Catholic at 10 a.m. next Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign for the state title.
Glenbard West 21, Lake Zurich 17 (Final)
Jacob Brinlee's 18-yard TD run has given Lake Zurich a 7-0 lead on Glenbard West in the first quarter of the Class 7A semifinal in Lake Zurich. Glenbard West tied the game when Steve Jones ran in from 4 yards out and Tim Hollowed added the kick. The Bears went ahead again on a 15-yard Brinlee run and after Matt Methling's second PAT kick Lake Zurich led 14-7 at halftime. The Hilltoppers tied the game in the third quarter on a 76-yard TD run by Adam Bruere and Hollowed's extra point kick. Lake Zurich took a 17-14 lead on Methling's 29-yard field goal with 4:30 to play but the Hilltoppers punched their ticket to state with 6 seconds left in the game when Mark Hibben scored on an 11-yard pass from Tyler Warden. Glenbard West will play Wheaton Warrenville South for the Class 7A state championship at 4 p.m. next Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.
