Nov. 6

World Community Day: Church Women United (CWU) of the Barrington Area will celebrate World Community Day Friday, Nov. 6, at Ss. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 410 N. First St., Cary, beginning at 10:45 a.m. World Community Day is an occasion for Christian women to pray and work for lasting peace. Guest speaker is Karen Hewitson, who is currently serving as the Northern Illinois Conference president of United Methodist Women. CWU of the Barrington Area continues its prison ministry by inviting attendees to bring a gift/donation of new or gently used board games appropriate for girls ages 14 to 21. The games will be used at Illinois Youth Center Warrenville. There will also be an agape luncheon after the service; attendees are asked to bring a sandwich and piece of fruit to share. World Community Day: "Piecing Earth Together" is the theme of Church Women United's 2009 World Community Day, focusing on the environment and how we are called to work together to be good stewards. Benefit Concert for Military Families: A benefit concert is being given at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Palatine to raise funds to support the families of the U.S. military. The Rejoice Singers will present the musical, "Our Flag Was Still There," a multimedia presentation along with a children's choir and Immanuel's adult choir. Fair Trade Holiday Market: Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, is celebrating global connections with its annual Fair Trade Holiday Market, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. There will be fairly traded products of all kinds from MayaWorks, Ten Thousand Villages, Equal Exchange and Evergreen Cards. MayaWorks offers items bursting with the glorious colors of Guatemala and is introducing the Forecita Baby Collection, designed by Mimi Robinson. Ten Thousand Villages brings products from all over the world, including a large selection of creches. Fair Trade coffee, cocoa, tea and chocolate is available from Equal Exchange. Hand-cut greeting cards from China are sold through Evergreen Cards. Alternative gifts will also be available for MayaWorks scholarships, Heifer Project, and Global Health "Buzz Off" bed nets. There will also be a bake sale. Proceeds will go to support Augusta Victoria Hospital, a project of the Lutheran World Federation. Its main task is to provide services for Palestinian Refugees. Matching funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Honoring veterans: Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 E. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, will honor veterans at worship services at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, and at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8.

Children's ministry: Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 E. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, will host a Parenting and Children's Ministry Workshop Saturday, Nov. 7. Bishop visit: The Right Rev. Packing party: St. Mark Lutheran Church is partnering with 94.3 K-LOVE Christian Radio station to do a packing party for Operation Christmas Child to make a difference in the lives of children around the world. Everyone is welcome to come out and help pack OCC shoe boxes that will be sent to children in Third World countries, war-torn countries and places affected by natural disasters. Rainbows Grief and Support sessions will meet Mondays at 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. The classes are for children (as young as preschoolers) and adults who have experienced the loss of a family member through death, divorce, deployment or even absence due to a serious illness.
