Citizen police school opens

The Buffalo Grove Police Department will conduct a Citizen Police Academy from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays, this week through Nov. 19. The course include tours of the police station and Northwest Central Dispatch Center; a K9 demonstration; scenario training on building searches and vehicle stops; courses on crime scene, officer survival, narcotics investigations and firearms safety and training; and a graduation ceremony. To enroll, you must live or work in Buffalo Grove and be 21 or older. Print out an application by logging onto vbg.org, then click on "Police Department," then "documents and forms." Applications can be dropped at the police station or faxed to (847) 459-0201, ATTN: Crime Prevention Unit.

Anti-hunger benefit Wed.

Local Mount Prospect folk rock musician Monia Pielak and Ye Olde Town Inn restaurant owner Tod Curtis are joining forces for "Strike a Chord to Strike Out Hunger," a charity food drive to benefit CEDA, the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County, on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Admission to the performance is three nonperishable food items, with Curtis matching admission donations. Pielak, who once herself received support through CEDA, performs at 8 p.m. at Ye Olde Town Inn, 18 West Busse Ave. Mount Prospect. For details, visit yeoldetowninn.net.

Kids' health, safety fair

State Sen. John Millner of Carol Stream will host a free children's health and safety fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26, at Jane Addams Junior High, 700 S. Springinsguth Road, Schaumburg. The fair is designed to help parents and children learn more about topics like bicycle and fire safety and the AllKids and Bright Start college savings. Information will also be available on child seat safety, AllKids, day care, tutoring, library programs, transportation and diabetes. Demonstrations include the Cook County Sheriff's Police K-9 Unit at 10 a.m. and American Tiger Hapkido Academy at 10:30 a.m. There will also be drawings and giveaways at 11:30 a.m. For details, call Millner's district office at (630) 351-9340.
