Wanless returns to guide Glenbard South
What a difference a quarterback makes.
Glenbard South, which lost to Glenbard West 49-0 last Friday, had signalcaller Trace Wanless back from an ankle injury and cruised to a 42-0 win Friday over Fenton.
Wanless made up for lost time and got the Raiders (1-1) on the board just less than five minutes into the game, the first score of the season for Glenbard South. He hit Connor Douglas on a screen and Douglas made a few defenders miss before he broke it to the outside for a 24-yard touchdown.
"He's our offensive captain and he keeps us going offensively," Douglas said. "He got us started fast and we just kept the momentum going."
Wanless completed 10 of 14 passes for 197 yards and had 4 touchdown passes. Austin Teitsma caught 3 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Mike Rovansek caught 2 passes for 72 yards and a score, and John Hentges caught an 11-yard strike from Wanless.
Hentges also had 11 carries for a team-high 69 yards in the win. Wanless also had 3 carries for 49 yards as he played a little more than a half.
"Wanless really opens up the field for big plays," Glenbard South coach Dan Starkey said. "It was really big to get on the board early after getting shut out last week. We executed well and played well in all facets of the game."
Though Wanless made an impressive season debut, even he was surprised when he heard his final statistics after the game.
"I really wasn't expecting all that I did today," Wanless said. "My line did a really good job blocking today and we just have so many weapons on offense. It's an easy job for the most past. I just get them the ball and let them do the rest. They make me look good."
That opening drive took any confidence that the Bison had after they let the Raiders score early in the ballgame. Fenton was not able to stop the screens to Douglas as he caught 2 balls for 43 yards on the initial drive.
"They beat us with their quickness and they were able to get to the corner on us and take advantage and break some big plays," Fenton coach Mark Farrell said. "They have a bunch of athletes and we had a couple of our good players in space injured or sick, so that definitely did not help us today. We didn't execute the plays we needed to to be competitive. It is a part of football; we needed to make those plays."
The Bison (0-2) were led by running back Izzy Reynaga who had 8 carries for 41 yards.
