Sept. 5
Book group: "The Ten Best Days of My Life" will be the subject of discussion of the book group "Reading is Believing" at North Northfield United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. The book, the debut novel of Adena Halpern, tells the story of a young woman who needs to write an essay describing the 10 best days of her life to justify her entry into "Seventh Heaven" following an automobile accident. Book discussion: The public is invited to discuss the book "Predictably Irrational: the Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions" by Dan Ariely at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, in Room 6 at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church, 1025 N. Smith Road, Palatine. In a series of experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Divine vocation: "Every Job, A Divine Vocation" is the sermon topic for Labor Day celebrations at Congregational United Church of Christ, 1001 W. Adult Bible Studies: Sunday, Sept. 6, marks the beginning of a new set of adult Bible studies offered by the Adult Bible Fellowships at First Baptist Church of Arlington Heights. Bible study: The Mount Prospect-based Tuesday evening Community Bible Study class is launching a children's program this fall, beginning Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at Northwest Covenant Church, 300 N. Parent-Child classes: Parent and Child Hand in Hand classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 8 to Nov. 24, at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. The classes are designed for parents (or grandparents or other caregivers) and 2-year-old children as an introduction to the preschool experience in a Christian environment. There will be Learning Centers for both the child and parent to explore, as well as planned activities that promote growth and meet the child's developmental needs. Classes are offered either Tuesday or Thursday, with a combined class during the last week. The enrollment fee per family is a one-time payment of $15 and tuition of $115 per child for the entire 12-week session. Women's Bible study: St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 24500 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, will offer a Women's Fall Bible Study on the book "The Faith" by Charles Colson. The 12-session series will be led by instructor Georgeanna Guritz, member of The Village Church of Barrington. Women's Bible study: Beth Moore Bible Study, "A Woman's Heart, God's Dwelling Place," will be offered at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Barrington. Sisterhood program: The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea has planned its opening program of the 2009-2010 year. At 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, the Sisterhood asks its members and prospective members to join them for a chocolate design and molding class at Morkes Chocolates, 1890 N. Unity World Day of Prayer: On Thursday, Sept. 10, thousands of people around the world will once again join with Unity Churches and Prayer Groups in a sacred partnership of prayer - the 16th annual Unity World Day of Prayer. Bible study: St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, 411 N. Wheeling Road in Prospect Heights, will offer Bible Study programs this fall. Two programs are planned: The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible is a 24-session Catholic study program of 73 books of the Bible. It will be offered Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m., and also on Thursday evenings. The program includes a video lecture by Jeff Cavins, with classroom discussion. The fee for a workbook and study aids is $45, and the classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 15. Acts of the Apostles is a 20-session study program, studying the spread of the church from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. This class is recommended for those who already have an overall knowledge of the Bible. It will be offered three times each week: on Tuesday afternoons, and Wednesday mornings and evenings. It begins Tuesday, Sept. 15. The program includes a video lecture by Jeff Cavins, with classroom discussion. Participants' workbook costs $30. Peace Walk: On Sept. 19, the South Church, 501 S. Emerson St., Mount Prospect, will host a communitywide afternoon Peace Walk and an evening Peace Day Celebration to commemorate International Day of Peace. Food donations: For the 13th consecutive year, the Men's Club of Congregation Beth Judea of Long Grove will be sponsoring Project Isaiah, giving life to the Jewish traditions of "tzadakah" (charity) and "Tikkun Olam" (repairing the world). As in past years, Beth Judea congregants will be asked to take home specially marked grocery bags on Rosh Hashana, Sept. 19-20, and return them at Kol Nidre services Sept. 27 filled with kosher food, paper goods and baby products. Zen And The Art of Piano Music: Will Tuttle, Ph.D., a pianist, composer, educator, and author based in Northern California, will be at Unity Northwest Church at 259 E. Catholic inquiry: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process, will begin new inquiry sessions on Tuesday evenings, at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Ministry Center, at St Hubert Church, 729 Grand Canyon, in Hoffman Estates. These sessions are open to all adults who have never been baptized and would like to investigate what the Catholic faith is all about, or who have been baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition and would like to come and learn what the Catholic community believes, or Catholics who were baptized but never brought up in the faith and would like to get back to their roots and prepare themselves for the other sacraments of initiation: Eucharist and Confirmation. Entertainment book: The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea is selling the 2010 Edition Entertainment Coupon Book. The cost for the Chicago North/Northwest Book is $20, with a voluntary $5 donation to Sisterhood. Parents Day Out: Fall registration for the 2009-10 Kingswood Parent's Day Out program is under way. Children must be 2 or 3 years of age by Sept. 1, 2009, to enroll. If space permits, children will be accepted during the school year as they reach the age of 2 and 3. Class time is from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children attend either a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday class. Parents may enroll their child/children for one day per week. Class size is limited to 16 children. The first day of class starts the week of Tuesday, Sept. 1. The monthly tuition fee is as follows: Tuesday-$95, Wednesday-$100, Thursday-$95, Friday-$95. Jewish youth programs: Beth Judea offers programs for third-graders through high school students, regardless of their Jewish affiliation. Kadinkers is the youngest youth group and is for students in third through fifth grades. It meets once a month on a Sunday after Sunday school. Yearly dues are $18. Kadima is the youth group for students in sixth through eighth grades. Kadima meets once or twice a month. Yearly dues are $35. United Synagogue Youth is the youth group for all high school students. The group will then enjoy their own Oneg Shabbat.
