Mt. Prospect man charged in BB gun shooting of Elk Grove girl

A 27-year-old Mount Prospect man is being held on charges he shot a member of the St. Viator High School golf team with a high-powered BB gun as she competed at Old Orchard Country Club.

The victim, a 17-year-old from Elk Grove Village, was shot in the knee at 6 p.m. Monday on the 12th tee of the club, 700 W. Rand Road, Mount Prospect police Public Information Officer Bill Roscop said. The student at the Arlington Heights school is scheduled to have surgery to remove the pellet this week, he said.

John L. Guy, of the 0-100 block of West Wimbolton Drive, was charged with four felony counts and two misdemeanors and is being held at the Mount Prospect jail, pending a Monday morning bond hearing.

He is charged with unlawful discharge of an air rifle and reckless conduct, both misdemeanors, and aggravated battery, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, and possession of ammunition by a felon, which are felonies, Roscop said.

Police knew the pellet had to have come from one of the townhouses on Wimbolton Drive because it runs parallel to the 12th hole. So they checked to see if any residents had criminal histories and went door to door to see if anyone had been known to use an air rifle, Roscop said.

Guy, whose driver's license had been revoked, was not home at the time, so police waited for several days for him to come home. When he drove up Friday night, police immediately spoke to him and ended up arresting him after a search of his car and his home, Roscop said.

Police reported finding a gram of heroin in the car and a pellet air rifle and ammunition for a high-powered rifle in his home.
