New pastor: The Rev. Tedd Steele, pastor for Young Families and Youth, joined the clergy team at the First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights this month. Steele will be responsible for developing ministries that reach and engage young families and singles in their 30s and 40s in leadership, mission, outreach and small groups. He will serve as a resource to men's ministry related to spiritual growth, discipleship and balancing work and family challenges within today's complex world. In addition, he brings his experience in working with youth, middle school and high school, encouraging adult leaders to develop and manage a vital and balanced ministry that shares God's love through engaging activities, learning opportunities and life-impacting mission trips. Steele received his formal education at Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma, where he developed his taste for blues and barbecue, and the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. He has served as the pastor at Faith United Methodist Church in Lisle for the past three years. www.fumcah.com

New officers: Congregation Beth Judea, a Conservative synagogue which has served the Northwest suburbs since 1968, elected 11 new officers and 12 new directors at its annual meeting May 27. The new officers, who will serve from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011, are as follows: President Bonnie Sender, Executive Vice President Rick Drazner, Education Vice President Natalie Solomon, Facilities Vice President Russ Barnett, Finance Vice President Lee Silver, Membership Vice President Diane Ganden, Ritual Vice-President Sandy Victor, Programming Vice-President Brian Gurin, Ways & Means Vice-President Cindy Lipka, Youth Vice-President Debbie Dubin, and Secretary Marilyn Green-Rebnord. Elected for a 1-year term as an at-large director are: Debbi Green, Barb Hyman and Wendy Wunsch. They will serve from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Rhonda Wener will serve as Immediate Past President from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011. These volunteers will be officially installed at Congregation Beth Judea's Installation Shabbat service that will take place Friday, June 26.

Pancake breakfast: The Knights of Columbus will sponsor a pancake breakfast and bingo at St Joseph the Worker Church, 181 W. Dundee Road in Wheeling, Fourth of July in conjunction with the Wheeling Fourth of July Festivities. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will be served from 8 to 11 a.m. and bingo will be played from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cards will be 50 cents each and all games will be split the pot. Family fest: Outdoor worship and Family Fest will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 5, at Christ Lutheran Church, 41 S. Rohlwing Road, Palatine. Come casual to this outdoor contemporary service. Patriotic topic: In celebration of American Independence Day, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" will be the sermon topic at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 5, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 1001 West Kirchoff, Arlington Heights. As part of the celebration, the senior youth will receive affirmation and commissioning as they prepare to embark July 11 on a mission trip to Sullivan, Il. In addition to participating in a week of home repair downstate, the youth are working on the "Biggest Food Drive of the Year." Concert: Best-selling folksinger-prophet and guitarist David M. Bailey has entertained throughout the country and overseas with his message of hope, a career that began when he was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1996. Initially told he had less than six months to live, Bailey turned to the stage to take his audiences on musical journeys filled with his keen insights about time, faith, hope, love and dreams. He will perform at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at 1400 Arlington Heights Road, Elk Grove Village. The event is organized by an Elk Grove Village family whose daughter is a cancer survivor and is a friend of David Bailey. Cost of the concert is $10 for advance tickets and $12 at the door. Speaker series: Theology-on-Tap, a speaker and conversation series for people in their 20s and 30s, is being hosted at 41 locations throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago in English, Spanish and Polish. Beginning its 29th year on Sunday, July 12, the program continues to provide the opportunity for young adults, both married and single, to learn more about the Catholic faith, make connections between faith and everyday life, and enter into discussions with their peers. This four-week, summer program offered Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, includes a speaker, conversation and theology. On Sunday, Aug. 9, Theology-on-Tap will conclude with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago, at Madonna della Strada Chapel, located on the Lake Shore Campus of Loyola University. Concert: On Sunday, July 12, Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road, Long Grove, invites the entire community to attend a free program at the synagogue called "2009 Tzofim Friendship Caravan: Israel Scouts." The sanctuary of Congregation Beth Judea will become more than a place of worship, thanks to a visit from Israeli Scouts, known in Hebrew as the Tzofim. Each summer for the past 39 years, a Caravan, composed of 10 musically talented Israelis from ages 16 and 17 and two adult leaders has performed a program of song, dance and story in Hebrew, English and Yiddish at synagogues and other venues throughout the Chicago area. Between songs, the teens share their personal stories and their dreams with audience members. The purpose of the program is not only to entertain audiences, but to "bring a message of hope, peace and friendship to the community." The show will begin at 7 p.m., and at 8 p.m. the Israelis will mingle with the audience. Prior to that, at 6 p.m. there will be a barbecue. Bake sale: St. Philip's Men's Group will have a bake sale between services from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Sunday, July 12, at the church, 1609 Pfingsten Road, Glenview. The sale will raise funds for the Giving Garden.

Lambs Farm: Families are invited on a trip to Lambs Farm in Libertyville on Sunday, July 12. Participants will leave the St. Philip Lutheran Church parking lot, 1609 Pfingsten Road, Glenview, at noon and return at 5 p.m. Cost is $10.

July 13

Summer camp: Trinity United Methodist Church, 605 W. Golf Road, Mount Prospect, is sponsoring a free summer camp for area children from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 13 through Thursday, July 16 at the church. Aimed at children in grades pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade, the camp will offer games, music, videos and hands-on activities to teach participants about world hunger and raise awareness of Heifer Project International. WorshipFest: Cross & Crown Church, Hintz and Rand roads, Arlington Heights, is having its third annual WorshipFest from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 18. There will be various worship bands playing throughout the day as well as great food from area vendors and the C&C grill house. There will also be games and activities for children of all ages. Admission is free. Donations and proceeds will go to help the Ministry of Hope. Cross & Crown began a ministry more than two years ago to help the under-resourced and homeless community in Arlington Heights and the surrounding area. On Saturdays they serve two full meals surrounding a service and fellowship beginning with setup at 8:30 a.m. and ending with fellowship after lunch at 2 p.m. The ministry also supplies donated clothing, personal items and bicycles as well as financial assistance to individuals on a case-by-case basis. The church has also embarked on efforts to build a new comprehensive living facility for the homeless and under-resourced as a temporary residence.

Rummage sale: The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea will host its Annual Rummage Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, in the Beth Judea Social Hall. Beth Judea is located on Route 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. The Sisterhood will be accepting gently used clothing and household goods beginning Sunday, July 26, through Friday, July 31. Catholic festival: The 2009 Catholic Festival of Faith, an opportunity for Catholics to come together to dialogue, exchange ideas and strengthen their faith, will be conducted on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The Festival will include a wide-range of practical workshops and sessions for teachers, principals and families including such topics as interventions with families in crisis, sexuality of the body for high school students, connecting schools to parish life, using Catholic School Boards effectively and a retreat for second-graders before first Communion. Also, providing important and topical presentations will be experts on ecology, catechesis and the arts, who will talk about many subjects including journaling, understanding "helicopter" parents, and infusing social teaching into curricula. Keynote speakers scheduled to appear at the festival include Chicago native, the Most Rev. Wilton Gregory, archbishop of Atlanta; Fr. Louis J. Cameli, Cardinal's Delegate for Faith and Mission, who has written numerous books on spirituality; the Rev. Guillermo Campuzano, C.M., a Vincentian priest from Colombia, currently teaching at DePaul University and advising the Archdiocesan project for Latino young people; R. Food collection: St Paul United Church of Christ is collecting for the Palatine Food Pantry every Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. The church is at 144 E. Shabbat Worship Services: Shabbat worship services are offered at 7:30 p.m. Fridays (Kabbalat Shabbat) and 9:30 a.m. Saturdays at Congregation Beth Judea, Route 83 and Hilltop Road, Long Grove. Daily minyanim are at 6:15 a.m. Mondays; 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. Sundays. Tot Shabbat services are held in the Main Sanctuary of the synagogue at 6:30 p.m. the second Friday of every month. Moms Bible Study: The Saturday morning Saint Paul Moms Bible Study would like to welcome new members. Rainbows Grief and Support sessions will meet Mondays at 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. The classes are for children (as young as preschoolers) and adults who have experienced the loss of a family member through death, divorce, deployment or even absence due to a serious illness.
