New officers: Congregation Beth Judea's United Synagogue Youth recently had its annual elections. The new USY Executive Board for 2009-2010 includes: President Ricky Brandt, Israeli Affairs Vice President: Becca Baich, Religion Education Vice President: Sam Ganden, Membership/Kadima Vice President: Rachel Bikshorn, Social Action/Tikun Olam Vice President: Brittany Brandt, Communications Vice President Eric Krause, Programming Vice President: Eric Goldberg and Past President: Jeremy Drazner. New deacons: Francis Cardinal George, archbishop of Chicago, has ordained 15 men as new, permanent deacons. New officers: Congregation Beth Judea, a Conservative synagogue which has served the Northwest suburbs since 1968, elected 11 new officers and 12 new directors at its annual meeting May 27. The new officers, who will serve from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2011, are as follows: President Bonnie Sender, Executive Vice President Rick Drazner, Education Vice President Natalie Solomon, Facilities Vice President Russ Barnett, Finance Vice President Lee Silver, Membership Vice President Diane Ganden, Ritual Vice-President Sandy Victor, Programming Vice-President Brian Gurin, Ways & Means Vice-President Cindy Lipka, Youth Vice-President Debbie Dubin, and Secretary Marilyn Green-Rebnord. Bidding goodbye to rabbi: Beth Tikvah Congregation located in Hoffman Estates, will says goodbye to Rabbi Max Weiss. After eight years of leading the congregation, Rabbi Weiss is stepping down to become the Rabbi at Oak Park Temple. To wish him well and thank him, there will be a special Shabbatservice beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12. For those people who cannot make the evening service, there will be an Ice Cream Social the following day, Saturday, June 13, 4-6:30 p.m. It will be a time for people to talk to Rabbi Weiss, his wife, Leslie, and their three children. Youth dance festival: A dance festival, showcasing teens in a variety of dance styles, is planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Schaumburg High School, 1100 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg. The hourlong show will include 100 youth from the Northwest suburbs and Fox Valley area and is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Baha'i prayer session: Baha'is in the Northwest suburbs invite the public to join them in marking the one-year anniversary of the imprisonment of seven Baha'i leaders in Iran. The public meeting and prayer session will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Des Plaines Public Library. The seven Baha'is have spent a year in jail without formal charges or access to their lawyer, Local Bahá'ís, several of whom have relatives in Iran whose civil rights are denied because of their faith, are also writing to their members of Congress, and urging others to do the same, to gather additional co-sponsors for two resolutions, H. Res 175 and S. Res. 71, currently before the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate respectively, which call for the release of the Iranian Baha'i leaders and other Bahá'í prisoners. Anniversary celebration: A Gala 50th Anniversary Celebration is planned for June 13-14 for Congregational United Church of Christ, 1001 W. Kirchoff Road, Arlington Heights. Summer music camp: Praise-Rocks @ CLC Summer Music Camp will be held June 15-26 at Christ Lutheran Church, 41 S. Rohlwing Road in Palatine. Pray for peace: A Prayer Service for Peace in the Middle East will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 15, at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 E. Main St., Barrington. A special guest, Ali Amr, will share his exceptional musical talents during and after the service. Additionally, he will share his personal story that encompasses life with his family in Ramallah on the West Bank, learning and performing music from an early age, and current studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Farmers market: Our Lady of the Brook Catholic Community will be the site of a weekly farmers market in Northbrook this summer. The market will kick off Wednesday, June 24, and will be held every Wednesday through Oct. 14 from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The market will feature dozens of vendors, selling the freshest produce, flowers, organic foods, artisan cheeses, baked goods and much more. Catholic festival: The 2009 Catholic Festival of Faith, an opportunity for Catholics to come together to dialogue, exchange ideas and strengthen their faith, will be conducted on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The Festival will include a wide-range of practical workshops and sessions for teachers, principals and families including such topics as interventions with families in crisis, sexuality of the body for high school students, connecting schools to parish life, using Catholic School Boards effectively and a retreat for second-graders before first Communion. Also, providing important and topical presentations will be experts on ecology, catechesis and the arts, who will talk about many subjects including journaling, understanding "helicopter" parents, and infusing social teaching into curricula. Keynote speakers scheduled to appear at the festival include Chicago native, the Most Rev. Wilton Gregory, archbishop of Atlanta; Fr. Louis J. Cameli, Cardinal's Delegate for Faith and Mission, who has authored numerous books on spirituality; the Rev. Guillermo Campuzano, C.M, a Vincentian priest from Colombia, currently teaching at DePaul University and advising the Archdiocesan project for Latino young people; R. James Nicholson, the former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, along with his wife, Suzanne; and ValLimar Jansen, a singer, cantor and recording artist known for her work with Gospel, contemporary Christian and gospel-jazz style music.
