Moore to visit Naperville:

Actress Julianne Moore will make an appearance at 7 p.m. today at Anderson's Bookshop, 123 W. Jefferson Ave., Naperville. Moore will be talking about her children's book, "Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully." The book is a follow-up to "Freckleface Strawberry," and tells the story of how 7-year-old Freckleface stands up for herself and her friends.

NEDSRA gives awards:

Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association honored the achievements of participants, part-time staff and volunteers at its annual "Reach for the Stars" night Tuesday at Medinah Shrine Center in Addison. Matt Rafter of Addison received the Superstar Participant Award, given to someone with five or more years of participation in NEDSRA programs who consistently demonstrates a positive attitude. Ryan Murray of Villa Park received the Superstar Athlete Award for having been involved in NEDSRA sports for three or more years and displaying exceptional sportsmanship and a positive attitude toward competition. Ashley Rabel of Itasca received the Rising Star Award, given to a NEDSRA participant involved five years or less and active in one or more programs. Among NEDSRA's part-time staff, Susan Lycko of Lombard received the Shining Star Award for assisting with programs for three continuous years or more and Steve Bremer of Roselle received the NOVA award for a part-time employee of two years or less. Sean Gascoigne of Lombard and Bill Werner of Bensenville were both presented with the Superstar Volunteer Award.

Make a splash:

Adults get in free when accompanied by a child during open pool night from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Turtle Splash Water Park, 129 W. National St., West Chicago. Admission is $1 for ages 18 and younger. The event is sponsored by WeGo Youth and the West Chicago Park District.

Artistic duo:

An opening reception for artists Mary Beth Martinec and Mary Kay Hanlock will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Gallery 200. 200 Main St., West Chicago. The two women, who also happen to be cousins, are the featured artists for June. Martinec paints watercolor landscapes and mixed-media work. Hanlock specializes in glass painting, using old windows, glass blocks and wine glasses as her canvas. Their work will be on display through June 28, and 10 percent of sales will be donated to the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, where Martinec works.
