Recession: Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, is offering families and individuals help in dealing with the recession through a series of free educational sessions. Topics include creating a financial plan (June 4 and 18); building wealth and risk management for both younger adults (June 2) and those approaching retirement (June 10); housing and mortgage issues (June 9); and raising financially healthy children (June 11). The sessions will be held on various weeknights from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Common Ground Meeting Room at Holy Family and are open to the public. Each topic will be presented as a self-contained program, so participants may attend all the sessions or whichever they feel are most beneficial. Several of the topics will be offered twice. Wine tasting: St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church will present its first Wine Tasting and Auction Saturday, May 30, at the church, 411 N. Wheeling Road, Prospect Heights. Tickets are $50 if purchased in May, and $60 at the door. It begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. Proceeds help support St Alphonsus Church and School. Everyone 21 years and older welcome.

Praying for people: In recognition of challenging times, members of North Northfield United Methodist Church are praying for the people of Northbrook. Members plan to "take it the streets" to pray with people in the church's neighborhood, beginning Saturday, May 30. As part of a "doorstep" ministry effort, a church team plans to knock on doors to ask people if they would like to participate. If they agree, a short prayer will be said with them. The prayer team will start in the immediate neighborhood around the church, which is located at the corner of Sanders and Dundee roads in Northbrook. Additional dates to visit more homes will be scheduled later in the summer. Junk in the trunk: St. Peter Community Church, 2700 Willow Road, Northbrook, will be having a Junk in the Trunk Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30. The rain date is Saturday, June 6. This is open to the public. You can park your car in the parking lot of St. Peter and sell directly from your trunk or set up a table by your car or van. The space is $25 and to rent a table is $5 extra, or you can bring your own. If you are a seller, you can register and pay ahead or come that day and pay when you enter. Check or cash will be accepted. Everything must be in working condition. No car seat or cribs can be sold. Concessions will be sold. Sellers can start setting up at 7:30 a.m. the day of the sale. Food for the Poor: The Rev. Jay Pierce will preside and provide a video presentation about Food for the Poor ministries at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday, May 31, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church 342 E. Pentecost service: The South Church will present a Pentecost worship experience at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 31, led entirely by its youth group, whose members range in age from 12 to 20. Drum circle: Unity Northwest Church, 259 E. Central Road, Des Plaines, will host a Drum Circle at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5. Bring your own drum or percussive instrument or they will be provided. The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail. It includes people of all ages. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with self and with each other.

Concert: The South Church presents the second in its 2009 series of music recitals, with The Chicago Pan-American Ensemble at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 6. Formed by husband and wife American cellist Andrew Snow and Mexican pianist Beatriz Helguera, the Pan-American Ensemble performs a standard cello and piano repertoire. In addition to Snow and Helguera, the June 6 recital will feature guest violinists Gregory Maytan and Mathias Tacke. The afternoon program will include the Mozart quartets in G Minor and E flat Major, as well as the Frescobaldi-Cassado Toccata for cello and piano.

Rummage sale: St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic School will hold its annual Rummage Sale June 13 and 14 in the gym. The hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday with 50 percent off everything. Please no "early birds," as Mass is going on until noon. A special "Pre-Sale" is open to the public the night before the sale, June 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. only. Admission to the Pre-Sale is $4. Concessions will be available in the dining hall. Summer music camp: Praise-Rocks @ CLC Summer Music Camp will be held June 15-26 at Christ Lutheran Church, 41 S. Rohlwing Road in Palatine. Pray for peace: A Prayer Service for Peace in the Middle East will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 15, at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 E. Main St., Barrington. A special guest, Ali Amr, will share his exceptional musical talents during and after the service. Additionally, he will share his personal story that encompasses life with his family in Ramallah on the West Bank, learning and performing music from an early age, and current studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. This service is held on the 15th of each month as part of an ecumenical effort in the United States and the world to pray daily until a just and lasting peace comes to all citizens of the Middle East. Farmers market: Our Lady of the Brook Catholic Community will be the site of a weekly farmers market in Northbrook this summer. The market will kick off Wednesday, June 24, and will be held every Wednesday through Oct. 14 from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The market will feature dozens of vendors, selling the freshest produce, flowers, organic foods, artisan cheeses, baked goods and much more. Parents Day Out: Registration has begun for the Kingswood Parent's Day Out summer session. This program is for children ages 2 and 3.
