Antioch notches 30th win
Make it a school-record 30 wins for Antioch's softball team.
The Sequoits opened the Class 3A state tournament Tuesday with a 7-0 win over host Richmond-Burton, as Olivia Duehr fired a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Antioch (30-2) advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. regional final in Richmond against the winner of Wednesday's semifinal between Marian Central and Johnsburg.
Ashley Mysliwiec (2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Duehr (RBI) each went 3-for-4, while Allie Anttila jacked a 3-run homer.
Wauconda 2, CL Central 1: At Dugdale Park in Waukegan, the Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the upset in their Class 3A regional semifinal.
Kayla Stos started Wauconda's winning rally with a one-out ground-rule double. Katie Schneider then drove a ball to right field. The ball skipped past the right fielder and Schneider circled the bases to score the winning run.
Kate Martino and Megan Holub also doubled for Wauconda (23-9), which advances to Saturday's 1:30 p.m. regional final against the winner of Wednesday's game between Vernon Hills and Regina Dominican.
Brittany Ehmann earned the win, allowing 4 hits while striking out five and walking a pair.
St. Viator 1, Stevenson 0: At Stevenson, Julie Sweeney (9-11) pitched a 1-hit shutout, as the Lions stunned the host Patriots in a Class 4A regional semifinal.
Sweeney was aided by outstanding outfield play from Torey Lenart, Ronnie Mack and Bridget Urbanus. Lenart and Urbanus each had a diving catch to save an extra-base hit.
St. Viator scored the game's only run in the third inning on Abby Dickey's RBI single off Patriots starter Allison Micucci.
Stevenson finished 20-13, while St. Viator notched a berth in Saturday's 10 a.m. regional final in Lincolnshire against the winner of Wednesday's game between Zion-Benton and Carmel.
Lake Zurich 10, Highland Park 0: At Dugdale Park in Waukegan, the Bears cruised in their Class 4A regional opener.
Lake Zurich will play in Saturday's 11 a.m. final against the winner of Wednesday's game between Deerfield and Waukegan.
Barrington 7, Mundelein 1: At Mundelein, the Fillies advanced to the regional final at 10 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Wednesday's game between Grant and Buffalo Grove.
