Elk Grove back on track; St. Viator sweeps
Elk Grove continues to rebound from a four-game losing streak in Mid-Suburban League baseball games.
Kyle Pfister (6-3) pitched 6 strong innings Saturday, and Colin Semler homered and had 4 RBI as Elk Grove (17-8, 4-4) beat visiting Hoffman Estates 9-1 in an MSL crossover.
The Grenadiers also beat Fremd 8-5 on Wednesday.
Pfister allowed just 1 run, 2 walks and 6 hits and had 8 strikeouts. Semler, Carl Sugihara, Donny Duschinsky and J.J. Kaczynski had 2 hits.
Mike Norman, Andrew Pettit and Erik Smoy had 2 hits for Hoffman (7-15, 3-5).
St. Viator sweeps St. Joseph: Julian Sipiora had a big day at the plate and on the mound as St. Viator (13-9, 3-5) extended its winning streak to four with East Suburban Catholic Conference wins of 17-7 and 11-1 in 6 innings in Westchester.
Sipiora went 4-for-7 with 2 homers and 6 RBI and threw a 3-hitter with 5 strikeouts in the second game. Jake Mastrangeli went 5-for-8 with 4 RBI, Phil Bar was 4-for-7 with 2 RBI, Kevin Gannon had 2 triples and Mike Fleming had 2 doubles.
Palatine 11, Woodstock 5: Cody Bobbit went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, a triple and 2 RBI as Palatine (10-12) ran its winning streak to six games with a nonconference victory. Byron Skinner (homer, 3 RBI), Jim Smearman (3 RBI) and Mike Luschen all went 3-for-4 for winner Phil Brand.
Barrington 11, Harlem 2: Tom Unak allowed only 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 innings for Barrington (13-7) in nonconference action at Machesney Park. Anthony Brignola went 3-for-3 with 2 steals and Johnny Day was 2-for-3 with 4 RBI.
Hersey sweeps Zion-Benton: Jake Knauss went 4-for-7 with 5 RBI and Game 2 winner Chris James went 4-for-7 Hersey (11-11) beat nonconference foe Zion-Benton 7-2 and 11-0 in 5 innings. Sal Locascio went the distance with 6 strikeouts and a walk in the opener.
James threw a 4-hitter and Chris Polinski homered in the second game.
Prospect 11, Lake Forest 10: Miles Osei homered and Prospect (9-12) scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the nonconference contest and end a three-game losing streak.
Fremd 6, Warren 2: Clint Terry got the victory and Mike Tauchman, Vince Addison and Joey DePaolis doubled for Fremd (11-6) in the nonconference win.
Leyden sweeps Proviso East: Dan Savas (3-0) and Ricky Zapata (4-1) combined to allow 3 hits as Leyden won 5-inning West Suburban Gold games 11-0 and 13-0. Justin Stawychny was 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, a triple and 6 RBI.
Savas threw a 1-hitter and Zapata allowed 2 hits.
New Trier 12, Maine West 0: Bob Cook hit a grand slam and threw a 5-hitter as New Trier (16-2, 7-0) won the 5-inning Central Suburban League crossover and ended a six-game winning streak for Maine West (14-5, 4-3).
Lane Tech 11, Meadows 3: Owen Stiff and Pat Conlin doubled for Rolling Meadows (11-10) in the nonconference loss.
Stevenson 9, BG 1: J.P. Kulick's double was 1 of 2 hits for BG (8-11) as Ohio-bound lefty Matt Robin had 13 strikeouts for Stevenson (17-4) in a nonconference triumph.
