Brand new day goes Palatine's way
Palatine lost its early momentum and found itself in a brand new nonconference baseball game Saturday with visiting Rockford Boylan.
But Phil Brand shut down the Titans the last 4 innings and the Pirates (6-12) pulled away to a 10-4 victory.
Brand went the distance as he allowed 8 hits and had 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. Palatine had a 4-run first but Boylan (11-5) tied it with 3 runs in the second and one in the third.
Cody Bobbit homered for the second straight game and Andy Prombo homered for the Pirates.
Buffalo Grove 3, Lake Park 1: Sophomore Dan Recht threw a 3-hitter and didn't allow an earned run as BG (7-9) committed only 1 error in the nonconference win.
Recht had 5 strikeouts and 4 walks. J.P. Kulick hit a solo homer in the first and James Hurley hit a solo homer in the sixth and doubled.
Maine West 11, Hersey 4: Justin Johann hit a 3-run homer in a 6-run first as Maine West (13-4) won the rain-shortened game in 6 innings at Hersey (8-9). Paul Solka also hit a 2-run homer and Lucas Udischas had 2 doubles for winner Josh Wright.
Johann, Udischas and C.J. Eisenberg also homered in Friday's 26-7 Central Suburban North win in 5 innings over Niles North.
Conant 18, Maine East 3: Conant (12-5) continued its offensive onslaught to make it 39 runs in two 5-inning games as Craig Davies hit a grand slam and Nolan Drake hit a 3-run homer and drove in 4 runs. Mike Keegan got the victory.
Prospect 12, Glenbrook S. 1: Three was the magic number for Miles Osei in the 5-inning road win for Prospect (8-9).
Osei threw a 3-hitter and drove in 3 runs with a third-inning triple. The junior lefty had 7 strikeouts and no walks and went 2-for-3.
Jason Leblebijian hit a grand slam in the fourth and went 2-for-3 with 5 RBI and Matt Molini was 2-for-3.
Elk Grove 12, Maine South 4: Visiting Elk Grove (15-7) broke out of a three-game losing streak as Joe DeHuebles got the victory and doubled twice in a game called after 6 innings.
DeHuebles (2-0) had 4 strikeouts and 3 walks and allowed only 1 run in his last 3 innings. Carl Sugihara went 2-for-3 for the Grenadiers.
New Trier 11, Barrington 10: A wild four hours at Barrington, which included an hour and 24 minute rain delay, ended up as a New Trier win with a run in the top of the ninth.
Barrington (10-6) erased a 4-1 deficit with a 4-run fourth, took a 7-5 lead with a 2-run fifth and tied it at 8-8 with a run in the sixth. Both teams scored twice in the eighth.
Anthony Brignola went 2-for-6 with his fifth homer of the season for the Broncos. Bryant Sullivan was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and Johnny Day and Tim Oakley had 2 hits.
Lowell Hall went 3-for-5 with 2 homers and 6 RBI for New Trier. Rain postponed Barrington's second game with Jones Prep from Chicago.
Morton sweeps Leyden: A pair of solid starts went for naught as Leyden (10-7, 5-3) lost 3-1 and 5-3 in the West Suburban Gold doubleheader at Morton.
Morton scored twice in the bottom of the sixth off Ricky Zapata (3-1), who threw a 4-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks and allowed only 1 earned run. Leyden had only 2 hits off Missouri-bound Ryan Crowley but Carlos Olavarria tied it in the top of the sixth with his third homer.
In the second game, a 3-run fifth by Morton broke a 2-2 tie off Jeremy Stawychny, who had 7 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 innnings. Leyden had a 9-6 hit advantage against highly touted junior Jeremy Wilson but committed 4 errors.
Benet sweeps St. Viator: A slow start in Game 1 and a big inning in Game 2 saw St. Viator (9-8, 0-4) get swept 9-5 and 11-9 in an East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader at Benet.
The Lions were down 6-0 after five innings in Game 1 before Cory Kay hit a 2-run homer and Brett Kay hit a 2-run double.
The Lions saw a 4-2 lead in the second game wiped out by a 7-run fourth by Benet (11-5, 4-0).
Jake Mastrangeli went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, Kevin Gannon was 3-for-5, Mike Fleming was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and Brett Kay had 2 hits for Viator.
Lane Tech 7, Schaumburg 3: Dave Compitello was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI as Schaumburg (7-9) lost for the eighth time in nine games.
