Saxons' Anderson aces her pitching test

Missy Anderson will be taking an advanced placement test today at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville - where she will play softball next spring.

The all-area senior right-hander sure passed her pitching exam Friday at Wheeling with flying colors.

Anderson (6-1) fired the first no-hitter of her varsity career while facing the minimum 15 batters and striking out six in a 14-0 five-inning Mid-Suburban League crossover victory.

"It's very exciting," said Anderson, an excellent student-athlete who plans to study Spanish and education. "My second baseman (senior Brittany Hill) told me I had a perfect game going in about the third inning and I kind of got scared."

The perfect game was broken up when junior Becky Menelle reached on an infield error to start the fifth.

Brittani Sapp followed with a fielder's choice, but the Saxons turned a 4-6-3 double play (Hill to shortstop Nicole Chase to first baseman Sarah McGinn) to end the game and give Anderson her first no-hitter.

"My defense was really on," Anderson said. "And when I can get a run or 2, that does it."

Anderson got plenty of runs Friday.

Junior catcher Aly Poehlmann (2-for-2), Chase (2-for-3), Brianne Lingl (3-for-3) and Theresa McGreevy (2-for-3) all singled in the first when the Saxons scored three times.

They added six in the third inning, getting a 2-run double to right-center by Alexis Carrevetta that drove home Jessica Cook and Anderson.

In all, the Saxons belted a season-high 15 hits.

"All around, we played really well," said Saxons coach Erin Malinowski, whose team is 7-2 and 2-0 in the MSL West. "Everything came together."

Wheeling coach Beth Anderson, who did not have a senior in her batting order Friday, said the Wildcats (2-3, 0-2) will use the game as a learning experience.

"We'll use it as a character builder," she said. "Schaumburg is aggressive on defense and a good-hitting team."

Hoffman Estates 4, Prospect 0: Hoffman senior Kaitlin Walsh (3-3) fired a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and 2 walks as the Hawks improved to 4-7 and 2-0 in the MSL West.

Sophomore Kelsey Pellus belted an RBI triple for the winners, while senior Kaitlyn Kliver (RBI) and freshman Linden Fick each went 2-for-3. Walsh and Alex Wulbecker also had RBI for the visiting Hawks.

Nikki Surico reached twice on errors for Prospect (1-11, 0-2), while Tracey Luttrell also got on base on 1 of the Hawks' 4 errors.

Megan Geraghty and Lisa Dominick were the only other Knights to reach base by drawing walks.

Fremd 10, Hersey 4: Kristen Werling (2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 steals, 3 RBI, double, walk), Jessica Tackett (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double, walk) and Casey Latal (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) led the offense for visiting Fremd (9-1), while Lena Brottman (7-1) struck out eight in 5 innings. Latal went the final 2 innings with 3 strikeouts.

Aubrey Fulton (2-for-4) and Sarah Laughlin (2-for-4) led Hersey (2-7, 1-1).

Palatine 5, Rolling Meadows 3: Junior Chrissy Roto went 6 innings with 3 strikeouts to earn the win for visiting Palatine (6-4, 2-0), which was led on offense by Joanne Jablonski (2 RBI, triple) and Katie Mnichowicz (3-for-4).

Tierney Larson went 2-for-3 and Maddy Urban had a sacrifice fly for Meadows (3-8, 1-2).

Barrington 15, BG 0 (5): Kim Cygan (14-1) went 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI and was also the winning pitcher for visiting Barrington (15-1, 3-0).

Kristin Kuhn (3-for-4, double), Lindsey Dulla (2-for-3, 3 runs) and Colleen Shandley (3-for-3, 3 runs) led the Barrington offense.

The Fillies scored their final 4 runs in the top of the fifth when Nora Logue's towering fly ball hit off the outfielder's glove, hit the top of the fence and fell over for a grand slam.

Losing pitcher Andrea DiPrima went 2-for-2 while Meg Miller had the other hit for the Bison (7-6, 0-2).

Maine West 1, Lane Tech 0 (12): Senior Emily Ott's streak of 20 hitless innings came to end in the seventh inning of this marathon.

However, Ott (9-3) went on to record the 2-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts and she scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th.

With one out and one on in the 12th, Ott walked. The Indians threw out the lead runner at the plate on Jenna Depa's fielder's choice, but Ott advanced from first to third with heads-up baserunning. Margo Ehorn reached on an infield error, allowing Ott to score.

Kaliegh McGing and Kelsey Hargesheimer had the 2 hits for Maine West (9-7).
