Merit scholars named:
Several area high school seniors have been named National Achievement Scholarship winners. The program, established in 1964, is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. and honors academically gifted black students. This year, the program will award a total of $2.6 million in college scholarships to 800 students nationwide. Recipients from the Northwest suburbs include Brendan Klinkenberg of Barrington, who attends St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights; Octavia Bray of Hanover Park, a student at Schaumburg Christian School; Eric Joyner of Palatine and Palatine High; and Lindsey Morrow of Streamwood, who attends Elgin High.
Elk Grove hall dedication:
Elk Grove Village will mark completion of its new village hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony 3 p.m. Thursday, April 9, and an open house, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 11, at 901 Wellington Ave. The $29 million project, which combines reworked existing space with new construction, will almost double the size of the hall from 55,000 square feet to 104,000 square feet. While village officials promise the construction will be done for the open house, it will be September before all village departments are in their permanent homes.
Easter egg hunt:
Capannari Ice Cream 7th Annual Easter Egg Hunt has been rescheduled to noon Saturday, April 11, from last Saturday due to the weather. It will be in Moehling Park adjacent to Capannari's, 10 S. Pine St., Mount Prospect. There will be 5,000 Easter eggs hidden in the park. The event is free and open to ages 2-7.
