Conant Cougars making it happen, taking 5-4 victory from Glenbard N.
Conant is not waiting for good things to happen this season.
The Cougars kept making them happen in the bottom of the eighth inning of Saturday afternoon's nonconference baseball game with Glenbard North.
Conant (6-1) pulled out a 5-4 victory as pinch runner Kevin Chua scored from second base when Glenbard North attempted an inning-ending double play on Mario Morrone's grounder to shortstop.
"When they brought in a new pitcher I told (Chua) on a ground ball, you're going all the way home," said Conant coach Jerry Song. "(Morrone) was safe at first and the kid was arguing a little bit. Chua didn't even stop and I said, 'Go, go.'
"We talk about it during practice and I told them we're just going to be aggressive."
Song wished it hadn't come down to a dramatic ending but Glenbard North (3-1) scored 3 unearned runs in a 4-run sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
"(Sophomore left-hander Paul) Warble pitched a great game and kept them off-balance," Song said. "They didn't really hit the ball hard at all."
Junior Mike Keegan got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and picked up the victory in his first varsity appearance.
"Mike stepped up," Song said. "He's kind of sneaky quick and he showed a little bit of maturity there."
