Wauconda wins opener over visiting Woodstock

Cold day. Hot start for the Wauconda softball team's offense.

The Bulldogs used a 9-run fourth inning to win their season opener in five innings, 13-3 over visiting Woodstock on Saturday.

Cara Nance led a 10-hit attack with a double and single. She also had 2 RBI, while Sam Palucska hit a 3-run double in the fourth.

Nine players had a hit for Wauconda, which trailed 2-0 early. Amanda Pausa tied the game with a two-out, 2-run single in the third.

Kayla Stos pitched all 5 innings for the win, striking out seven and walking two. She did not allow an earned run.

Barrington Quad: It was cold enough at Barrington's softball quad to pull a quad.

And while the temperature was barely above freezing, the bats of Stevenson and Mundelein were equally cold.

Stevenson lost 3-1 to Barrington and 4-0 to Elk Grove, while Mundelein fell 9-0 to Elk Grove and 12-3 to Barrington.

Stevenson (1-3) managed just 2 singles against Barrington, which scored all 3 of its runs in the second, and got 3 singles against Elk Grove.

Maine W. 8, Grayslake Central 5: Abbie Goetsch homered twice for the Rams in the losing effort. Maine West pitcher Emily Ott recorded 14 strikeouts.
