Jacobs stuns defending state champ; South Elgin wins
The Jacobs softball team had lined up a top field, including South Elgin, Hoffman Estates and defending Class 4A state champion Lincoln-Way Central for a season-opening round robin on Saturday, but the cold weather cut the schedule to just one game each.
And what a game it was for the Golden Eagles.
Sophomore Kara Arceneaux fired a 1-hitter with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk, and the Eagles committed only one harmless error behind her as they stunned Lincoln-Way Central 1-0. Sarah Jacobson's triple in the sixth inning led to the game's only run.
"It was a very cold day but it was good to get out and get our first win," said Jacobs coach Jeremy Bauer. "We beat a very good team."
South Elgin 15, Hoffman Estates 2: Courtney Bosteder hit a home run and Cary Thereon allowed just 5 hits as South Elgin won for the first time this season.
Bartlett 4, Naperville North 1: Elizabeth Kay was 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Callie Dennison scattered 5 hits as the Hawks moved to 2-0 on the season. Stevie Taskow also drove in a run for Bartlett. Dennison struck out five and walked none.
West Aurora 3, Burlington Central 0: Mississippi State-bound Stephanie Becker fired a no-hitter at the Rockets in this nonconference game. She struck out 13 and walked two. Mackenzie Scott suffered the loss for BC (3-1) in her first action of the season. She allowed 3 hits.
St. Edward sweeps: St. Edward punched out 24 hits in winning a doubleheader over Aurora Christian by scores of 11-0 and 13-3. Sarah Field got the win in both games for the Green Wave (2-1). In Game 1 she allowed just 1 hit with 9 strikeouts. Kristi Knott started Game 2 in her first pitching appearance in 6 years but after giving up 3 runs in the top of the first, she gave way to Field, who allowed only 2 hits the rest of the way. Field was also 5-for-7 at the plate on the day with 3 doubles, a grand slam home run and 8 RBI. Knott (3b) and Megan Smith (2b) also had 2 hits in the opener and Kristina Brockner had 4 hits and 2 RBI on the day. Knott and Smith each had doubles in Game 2 and Steph Werner added 2 hits.
