Northwest suburban baseball wrap-up
Fremd needed a win in a big way after losing its first two baseball games.
The Vikings got it Thursday as Matt Johnsen and Jake Llanas combined on a 5-hitter and they held on for a 4-3 victory over defending Class 4A state champion Prairie Ridge.
"It's a good win for these guys and a big win," said Fremd coach Chris Piggott. "They should be excited about it."
Johnsen's only trouble was in the third when he gave up all 3 runs (1 unearned). He finished with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks.
"He was good," Piggott said. "He got ahead of the hitters all day for the most part. He's around the plate, he gained a little pop on his fastball this year and he's got a good change."
Johnsen came out after throwing 92 pitches and Llanas retired the side in the seventh.
"He did a great job of throwing strikes," Piggott said. "He was ahead of the hitters and we played much better defensively."
Fremd got a run in the first on Clynt Terry's groundout. Todd Dunham had an RBI triple, Joe Depaolis had an RBI single and Brandon Middlebrook an RBI groundout in a 3-run second.
Elk Grove 5, Danville 3: Elk Grove (5-1) scored 4 runs in the top of the first and Donny Duschinsky threw a complete-game in the nonconference win at Danville.
Duschinsky scattered 7 hits and finished with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.
"He threw really well," said Elk Grove coach Terry Beyna. "He used all three pitches (fastball, curve, changeup). I thought he really stepped up and was a pitcher and not a thrower.
"It was exactly what I was looking for out of him."
Duschinsky and Danny Lopez had sacrifice flies and Joey DeHuelbes and J.J. Kaczynski had back-to-back RBI doubles in the first.
"We swung the bats extremely well in the first innings," Beyna said, "and then they really held us down."
Schaumburg 4, Dundee-Crown 2: Tim Massat hit a 3-run homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth for Schaumburg (2-0) to wipe out a 2-1 deficit.
Anthony Solmo had an infield single and winning pitcher Mike Mistrata singled to start the sixth. Massat, who drove in a second-inning run with a grounder, hit the first pitch over the fence in right-center.
Mistrata allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks and had 7 stikeouts in 6 innings. Andy Keehn pitched the seventh for the save.
Prospect 9, Notre Dame 8: Four players had 2 hits as Prospect (1-1) held on for a wild nonconference home victory.
Prospect broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the fifth and scored 3 runs in the sixth. Notre Dame had the tying run on second in the seventh but John Coen got his third strikeout in 2 innings for the save.
Jason Leblebijian (2-for-3) had a 2-run double in a 5-run third. Singles by Brian Bauer and winning pitcher Miles Osei led to the tiebreaking run on an error in the fifth.
Thomas Kelly (2-for-3) and Osei (2-for-3) had RBI singles in the sixth. Matt Molini also went 2-for-3 for the Knights.
York 7, Hoffman 6: Chris Fett went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI and Zach Demmon had a 2-run double for Hoffman Estates (1-2) in the nonconference loss.
Glenbrook South 8, Meadows 5: Rolling Meadows (1-2) had 2-run sixth and seventh innings but Glenbrook South answered with 3 runs in the top of the eighth.
Dan Lauria had 2 doubles and an RBI for Meadows.
Episcopal (Fla.) 9, St. Viator 6: A 6-run fourth sent St. Viator (2-2) to its first loss in the Westminster Classic in Fort Lauderdale. Julian Sipiora went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Brett Kay was 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and Kevin Gannon and Cory Kay had 2 hits.
Huntley 12, Barrington 1: Jack Scheffler hit his second homer in as many games for Barrington (2-1) in the five-inning nonconference loss.
